Daytona ‘Newman’ dial 116509-0072 Quite a Rare reference

I’m posting some pictures of the 116509-0072 WG Daytona as I think it’s gorgeous with it’s ‘neo-Newman’ dial.

It’s not in the Rolex 2019/2020 catalogue and therefore not many people are familiar with it so here goes:

Thanks. Here in the book it says ‘Paul Newman’ dial for the two pictures on 2nd row:

Your dial is not like that.

The "Paul Newman", properly called an "Exotic Dial", has a different colour around the perimeter of the dial, yours is one colour...

I see, I thought it looked like the ‘modern version’ of the old Newman at a glance, didn’t realise there was so much science behind it...

Anyway, I can’t edit the title to delete it...

When I bought this Daytona in 2000, I was under the impression this had a “Paul Newman” dial. Is this correct? Either way, I found it a stunning watch and I still feel that way about it...

It’s a gorgeous watch!

According to the comments above it doesn’t qualify as a Newman dial, but who cares, it’s solid gold and looks stunning!

You’re absolutely correct, when I bought it I really didn’t care other than to think to myself it emulated that Newman look. It will never matter to me and someday my sons may just be happy to inherit it. Thank you for your comments...

Here’s a good article explaining Newman Daytonas with some helpful photographs showing the differences between the dials. I think people often confuse the Panda dials found on some precious metal references with the Exotic dials of PN Daytonas. The photos illustrate just how different the Exotic dials were from the standard Daytona dials. I actually prefer the non Newman panda dials and wish Rolex reintroduced them on ss models.

I love the OP's watch, if I were in the market for a gold Daytona, it would def be a 116509-0072 or a Zenith version. I would even consider the Oyster-flex version for. EST. $10k less.

Is the 116509-0072 watch, rare though? Just curious.

Beautiful watch for sure.

The WG Daytona two most famous dial is this and the blue, nowadays every Rolex is apparently 'rare' and every Daytona is either a PN or Panda.

There were a few Daytonas in YG that had/have the ending PN but I don't think OP watch is one of them. It is a panda though ;)

Apparently no one on this forum remembers what an actual Newman dial is.
