Greetings! Im new to Forum and could use help identifying my Grandfather's watch.
The watch is currently being serviced, and the person doing so called me up to to confirm that the numbers matched up and that it was in-fact original.
He stated that it was a 1952 model. I can provide a link he sent me with some before pics. (they don't include serial numbers and the likes, but I could get those too). Mi first concern, is the fact that the Dial does not say Swiss, or Swiss Made at the six o'clock. Any help understanding the history behind it's background would be greatly appreciated. Could a Radium era recall serviced model explain it's (confusing) origins? Pepín |

The watch should be done soon, and I can't wait to own something that belonged to my grandfather, regardless of it's authenticity or flaws, if any. And I'm sure when I see him he'll be able to explain face to face the story behind the watch. I just rather not bombard him with intricate questions while he works.

1560 movement isn't '52 maybe '59 and up.
Dial has been refinished. Dial would not be expensive to source. |

Thank's for the reply!
So the Dial could be or is in-fact original, but refinished, and without the swiss made at 6 o´clock ? would't that make the dial rare and thus part of it's historical value ? P- |

Assuming it is refinished (I'm not going to download the zip file to look at photos), the dial is one-of-a-kind, and has no value. What kind of watch is it, by the way? I assume it's a Rolex. When figuring out the year from the serial number, don't overlook the serial number reset in 1954 IIRC.

Well, the watch is back, and it is indeed a genuine Rolex 1600 series with a 1560 caliber two tone yellow gold, riveted oyster bracelet with a 880XXX serial number.

It's the serial number that confuses me.

The 1600 is a very nice reference, I hope you enjoy it and wear in good health.

Greetings! Im new to Forum and could use help identifying my Grandfather's watch.
This is a copy of your zipped picture - I stripped all the extraneous compression code. So it may not be a sharp as your original, but good enough for discussion’s sake.
Did your watchmaker confirm that this is a refinished dial? You should read the sticky about attaching photos and you’ll have no problem attaching more pics. iCloud photo albums can’t be dragged to a post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Ineterestedwatcher, those where exactly the words that my watchmaker used "Ï hope you enjoy it, and wear it in good health". eerie..
77T , thank you for the heads up, i will be reading on that thread presently. I don't recall my watchmaker ever mentioning about redialing. I could write to him and ask. |

It's certainly a redial, fonts are completely off. You should confirm the model by removing the bracelet and posting the ref number (found at the 6 o'clock position), it's possibly a 34mm case.

Redialed. Serial number dates it to approximately 1963. As I mentioned in my previous reply, the OP was apparently confused by the serial number reset in 1954. Like @Richard Carver, I would like to see the reference number.

It would make a lot of sense, if someone could do me the favor of re editing this pic while I still figure out the attachment of pics.

BTW, that reference number was found at the 12 o'clock position on my watch.

I too have found not only the fonts, but also the over extending of some second markers over into the dial a bit sketchy. Also upon looking at the first 3 digits of the serial number, it appears to me they look more like an 860, or even possibly a 960 instead of 880, if any of those two make sense.

There is no rush for us to continue unpacking zip files. Your watch has a refinished dial. Come back when you’ve learned how to attach pictures. We can wait. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

And i did, and read up, much in part thanks to you guys that pointed me out, and realized it must be from the year you've all been stating. Thank you so much.
That been settled, what would you do with the dial ? if you intend to keep the watch because it is after all particularly special to you. Are there options, that are not damaging' ? |

Is there someone in the forum particularly skillful in sourcing the correct dial for this particular watch that you could kindly point me towards ?
