2021 Submariner
I know this is a dumb question. But do you all really think that Rolex is going to make the new submariner smaller? I think we can all agree that a movement update is going to happen to the submariner. But I feel like the chances of a major change to the rolex case size is pretty slim. And this is coming from someone who desperately wants a smaller sub.
Sorry for the rant |

No.
I don't think it will get smaller. The operative word being "think". Rolex don't let me into these secrets. But it will definitely get a new movement. Maybe this year, maybe next year, maybe the year after that etc. That's a safe bet, although I wouldn't bet on the date it happens. |

I think it will stay pretty much the same size since the GMTs didn't change much with the new movement. Interestingly I just read that Baselworld 2020 is postponed to Jan 2021 due to, you guessed it, Coronavirus (see link below)! I'm guessing Rolex may even halt production if the staff shows signs of being infected. Interesting times. Cheers!

2021 Submariner
My gut tells me it will stay at 40 just for history reasons. As for the case dimensions and lugs, that’s anyone’s guess. Personally I wouldn’t mind if they made the case somewhere between the maxi case and pre ceramic.

I would love to see the Sub return to its origins and proportions in the form of a Big Crown ceramic Submariner.

Has the Sub ever been smaller than 40 mm?
If not, I doubt Rolex would make a smaller version |

For 67 years the Submariner has been 40mm - very unlikely that Rolex would change that. If you desire a larger case, may I suggest a 44 mm Sea Dweller - but be prepared for the much heavier case and feel....

When I think about potential Rolex design changes I look to their past history for clues. Specifically, I thought about Hodinkee’s Oyster Bracelet article and how Rolex just had a relentless pursuit of over engineering a bombproof bracelet. Even if it meant small incremental changes.
So when I think about the Submariner, I think it’s less likely you’ll see small design changes without reason. Yes to a movement t update, but as much as I would love a smaller, thinner sub case I just don’t see it. Tudor, however, is a completely different story. I see Tudor as the experimental sister to Rolex where they are just ripping and going trying new things. That’s how we got the BB58 and also the PX01 (where the f*ck did that one come from?). So my personal opinion is if you’re looking for something more vintage sized then keep your eyes on Tudor. Rolex will likely the machine chugging along barring any large change up at the executive management level. |

I don’t know why they’d change the Sub dimensions. It isn’t like demand is falling. I’m sure it’ll eventually get an updated movement, maybe at the 2021 release.

New movement, still 40mm and lugs slimmed slightly like with the GMTs - seems pretty obvious to me

No one knows for sure what 2021 will bring for Rolex releases....sure, it could include an update to the Sub but it could just as easily not. Point is, buy what you like when you can....there were people waiting for this years Basel to see if there was going to be a new Sub and look what happened, no one knows what will happen. The sea dweller was never 43mm until it was.

Sub will get new movement. I can’t see the case changing. Rolex moves forward, not back. Tudor is Montres Rolex’s homage to the past.

The case shape, dimensions, comfort plus the extra bling of the yachtmaster is perfect for me which satisfied the wants and pushed the sub and gmt further down the must have list. Wouldn’t say the yachtmaster has identity issues at all, the sub will always remain as the superb simple traditional toolish watch that it is, but the yachtmaster goes in the comfort, fancy, refined direction and holds its own well as a lot of people are after just that. |
