Wow, dived right into the deep end too.

If it's real [and I have no reason to believe it's not] I wouldn't wear it. Crack that bezel and you lost about $15K.

Congrats on a rare beauty!

Wow! That does look beautifully hot! Did you do a Geiger reading on it prior to purchase?

The Bakelite bezel is very fragile so I am wearing with extreme caution...
This is from 1959, the bezel still glows beautifully
The hands and indexes does not glow anymore, I don’t know if the dial
was relumed or not

Congrats on your acquisition and for sharing the pics here. It's quite rare to see a 6542, especially with a bakelite bezel, since many were replaced in the past with an aluminum insert.

That's also a high end of the food chain to get into vintage. I'm assuming you've been a contemporary enthusiast to this point, based on your background of owning a current GMT.

A couple questions out of curiosity: 1) Did you do a Geiger reading on the insert and if so, how did it register? 2) I believe some of those gilt dials had lume that would react to UV light, but rapidly fall off. I know that's the case on some early matte dial lume, but may be wrong here. What did the seller say about the dial?

Hi there, I have bought many watches from this particular private seller, including 2 Tiffany dials Patek Philippe (Nautilus 5990 and Aquanaut 5164a), a Patek 5970p, a Patek 5070p. So, in this case, I bought the seller.
He bought this particular watch in Belgium, from Le Collection’ Heure in Brussels in 2015....and gave me the sale papers with serial number and receipt (that was the first watch I ever bought without certificate and box)
Summing up, I bought without fear of being fake
I did not check the watch with a Geiger counter yet (arranging that at the moment)
The seller had nothing special to say about the dial, he does not know if it was relumed or not

If it were me, I’d source a vintage aluminum Pepsi insert to wear, and safe the Bakelite bezel.

Easier said than done, yes?

I believe there'd be more chance of damaging the Bakerlite bezel trying to remove it, than being a little more cautious whilst wearing it.

But congratulations to the OP, for such a fantastic pick-up, in great condition.

That’s exactly what I am afraid of
I believe it is riskier trying to remove the bezel than it is to wear the watch carefully
I will just have to wear it less often to minimize the risk (unfortunately, )
Maybe leave it to special ocasions only

There are aftermarket bakelite inserts available which would be more appropriate IMHO

Jeez, most people buy 20 serious vintage watches before they get to one of these. You've really taken the short route.

These Bakelite inserts (not "bezel") fracture like thin glass. Be really careful.

Really cool piece and I would agree, special occasion wear! Admittedly not an expert on that era of gilt dial, to know which should have reactive lume. I always favor watch condition over papers anyway, as long as you’re satisfied with the provenance. Keep us posted on the Geiger reading.
