Child's watch
Anyone have any recommendations for a boy's watch?? I know Rolex makes a midsize but I'm looking for something for an 8 year old. All the stuff I found on the net seem to be toy quartz watches. This is something my in-laws want to get my son.

I bought my rolex when I was 13, and I still love it. I think 13s a good age to introduce boys to watches, but maybe you could get him a Seiko or Citizen? I think seikos are pretty nice for their price.

I had Swatches at that age. They held up pretty well to all the havoc that I could reap upon them. But they also sold those really great rubber face guards for them too.

Or maybe you could get him a pre-owned tag. The older models usually are smaller, and make good beaters. I have this one from my father.
My brother is 11, and he wears this tag. He recently put it on a leather band, and looks really nice! |

I think it depends how mature the child is and also his level/type of activity. If the boy's a sports fan, you might want to get him a timex ironman or a g-shock. If he's more of the indoorsy type, then you could think about dressier basic models from japanese makers.
But, a swatch would actually be well suited to most situations and you have a range of styles to choose from. I wouldn't recommend expensive watches as boys do lose things easily. I know I've lost about 2 watches myself when I was a kid.

My brother and I both had TAGs when we were in middle school. Loved them until we got our Rolex's :)

Thanks all for your input. I looked at swatch but it seemed a little too showy. I hadn't thought of the older Tags. But Seiko seems a good bet. I thought of Rolex but I wanted to give that myself when my boys are older.

Maybe I'm off it...but at 8 years old, If you asked me what kind of watch I wanted, I'll bet you a zillion dollars my answer would have been either Spiderman or Dallas Cowboys.

People, we are talking about an 8 year old boy !!! We're talking about used Tags, a Rolex, Seiko, etc. IMO, I would wait at least another 5 years before getting him a watch worth over $100. Again, this is just MY opinion, (so please don't flame me lol). IMO, 8 is just too young for an expensive watch. Heck, I've always loved watches, and my first was a Timex in 8th grade lol. Give the boy some time, he will learn to better appreciate it as he gets older. |

I had this fantastic lime green Festina alarm chronograph - great little watch, and plenty to fiddle with, perfect for an 8 year old

My boy is nine , and wanted a nice watch for his birthday this year, i was very tempted to give him my old Tag Sel stainless . My wife said your crazy ..... we opted for a decent looking Fossil all stainless for him . He was delighted with it . If he takes care of it I will upgrade a little later.
