Daytona Disappointment

As some of you know, I am actively searching for a white gold Daytona with a black dial. In interim, I took in on trade a SS black dial, thought it would do. Now I am not sure I want either. Although I seldom would use the chrono, this is what DRIVES ME NUTS: when you initiate the chronograph, only after the second hand makes a full revolution, does a minute chrono hand advance by 'jumping' one minute increment. Why? It gives it a quartz feel and I don't like it. The center minute hand advances little by little - why can't the chrono do that?

JJ - no wonder you don't like chronos, I am joining the ranks too, I think.

Reading this thread got me thinking and since I am wearing my Speedy Pro today I gave it a test. The chrono minute hand doesnt move little by little but it does kinda slide to the next minute after the chrono seconds makes a full rotation. Does the Daytona chrono snap all at once just like a quartz? Buy the Speedy pro..it may not bother you as much for 1/3 the price!!

one of the reasons why i passed up on daytona, i also agree with JJ that the dial is a little messy and cluttered, the lume is nothing to brag about either. The other annoying thing is the polished bezel that gets scratched up like crazy when using it daily. I miss the vintage daytona bezel insert, even the vintage tudor chronos.... Rolex bring that bezel insert back!

Simple answer its because its mechanical, and how else is it going to advance in one minute intervals. The sub dials show the full minutes or hours the large timing centre hand show parts of a second.

I'm also one who really loves to see the sweeping seconds hand on a 3 or 4 hand dial.....as opposed to a chrono. It just doesn't 'do' much for me, since I'd never use the chrono function either. Plus I NEED a date!

Padi,

Both of my Breguets, upon initiating the chrono seconds, start advancing the chrono minute hand little by little, just like the actual minutes.

This is why I love this watch for Chrono and water activities function. They are cheap.

It jumps for readibilty (no relation to drinkability). It is a precise measurement of time so if you hit the "stop" button, you don't want to have to grab a loupe to distinguish excatly how many minutes have surpassed.

Well, the chronograph function serves different purpose though similar to the center minute hand.
I've used the hand held chrono timer for track and field training when I was younger and that is how the chrono works. the minute hand will stay put until a full minute is reached to it is less likely to make a wrong reading.
In addition, the minute hand does not advance instantaneously like the date on subs. it advances over and I find it rather fun to watch that minute hand advance the way it is.

Please do not hate me Daytona lovers. The Daytona has never really appealed to me. At first I thought I liked it. Then I started looking at multiple angle vies of the watch and case, and crystal and dials and so on and it is too rounded for me. Kinda a little girlie in my opinion.

I have a 1970 tissot chrono with ValJoux 7734 movement. The minute counter advances gradually not in one minute jumps. There are lots of good vintage watches out there with ValJoux 7734 movements and they are usually not very expensive. I think I paid around $500 for mine, which is on the low end. Other marks, like Heuer, probably command 2 grand, but certainly less than a Daytona.

Also have a 1930s vintage one-button chrono with ValJoux 22 movement. The minute counter on this also advances gradually.

Had no idea about the one minute jumps on the Daytona. Do the vintage models with ETA movements do this too?

Good explanation however your simple answer may not be simple enough for some. ;-)

Mosco,

Simply put my friend, you have Breguets and this is a Rolex chrono. I know what you are talking about, Blancpain's chronos do this as well, minute hand moves gradually when activated. This is not a knock on Rolex but it just shows you how good some of these high-end chronos are.......

It may look quartz-like because the minute hand ticks and not sweep with the seconds. I really don't know why they don't make it gradually move like a normal watch minute hand would do. I mean our watches don't tick another minute.

The answer is on here three times already. If you are actively timing an event it is much easier to determine the elapsed time with the minute hand "jumping" to the next minute on the minute. Much easier to read for us old guys with bad eyes. Your other complaints I feel are warranted.

So now the DJ, DD, and Daytona are all "girlie" or ladies watches. How did that escape me all these years???

The DJ and the DD are women's watches because Rolex's press release stated that their 36mm watches are women's model.

I have the press release and will download it later....it's sad but true.

So Rolex takes a stab at making a bigger DJ and to excite the millions of men around the world that have DJ's they now call 36mm a ladies model. Good try Rolex and all that buy into it. I ain't buying. The DayDate is a much better looking watch than the DD II in person and I'm reserving judgement on the DJ II until I see it. A press release will not make me quit wearing mine.

From people's experience with the DDII, they said it was quite nice and gives a good wrist presence that the DD use to give, before the DDII was released.

Well I'm a people and I've had both on and think the proportions are all wrong on the DDII. JMHO and I still say no press release will make quit wearing my 116234.

Random.

The daytona used to be my grail watch but now I don't have a grail watch anymore. If I bought my grail watch I would want another watch anyway. As far as what you are complaining about that probably wouldn't bother me as much as other things about the daytona such as lack of date and sweeping second hand.. Plus I think the watch is overpriced..

You know what's amazing - the Zenith Daytona HAD the date capability, but Rolex took out the wheel... WHY? If you advance the Zenith Daytona's hands manually, every 24 hours you will hear a click, as though the date wheel should be advancing... only there is no date wheel!

Yes, as far as I know this is on purpose for clarity, and some consider it an additional complication. It's a good thing.
