Submariner No Data 14060M vs Explorer II 16570 Polar

Good morning to everybody, I am considering to buy a 5 digit Rolex and I cannot make a decision between the Sub No Data years 2000 (available with dial 2 lines till 2007 and 4 lines starting from 2008) and the Explorer II Polar.
I see more particular the Explorer, but the charm of the Sub No Data catch my eyes every time a look at it.
Which one would you suggest me to go?
I would appreciate to get also yours considerations about the suggestion.

Get both if you can. I think the polar explorer and the sub compliment each other. If i had to choose one it would be the polar explorer first.

A 2-liner sub is hard to beat, however I think I’d pick the Polar in this case...
The Sub is awesome but the clasp is a little bulky for everyday wear. Just my opinion.

I’ve had both and they’re both good choices. The Explorer II is a great under the radar Rolex. The sub gets noticed. The Explorer II is also good value as you’re getting the GMT and date complications. It’s a great tool watch and goes with anything. I love the white dial, feels more unique.

Will you be using the GMT function? I love the look of the polar, but chose my 14060m because I have no need for a GMT complication.

I would start with the Submariner as it will be more difficult, the longer you wait, to acquire one at a good price and in the right condition. The Explorer has had a brief burst of popularity that has been caused by the lack of other models being available. I have always preferred the Rolex Divers to any other model and if you stopped with one watch the Submariner could work for life.

I mean I always go function first. Between the two, polar. It has a date function and gmt hand. If it was a sub data and Explorer Ii, I find I use the data and I find much use for the bezel to measure elapsed time or I use it as a reminder of an appointment. Can’t do that with the Explorer ii, though I do love that watch.

I would go for the 14060M. I feel that the "old" 40mm Explorer II is kind of a "cheap" GMT 2.

I had the exp2 and sold it to pick up a very good condition 14060m 2 liner. Looking back I wish I would have kept the explorer and just spent the extra money to get the sub. I do like my sub but miss the polar dial.

Bottom line get both.

As others have said both is ideal, but if only one is an option id personally go ex2. Just a more versatile watch and in my personal opinion the best rolex reference available.

I'd go with the sub.
I had the Exp2 for a couple years and never really bonded to it. Ironically it has so many people talking about what an underdogs it is that it's gotten over-hyped IMO.

This is just my perspective however, and there will be many others.

I got the polar explorer 2 and have never regretted it. I was right on the verge of adding a 2 liner 14060m before the pandemic tanked the market. When things get back to normal I am definitely adding the sub. Get both.

Thanks to all of you for precious advice. I always had black and blue Rolex, so I am a bit concerned if with time I will get enough of white dial .... for the moment it gives to me the idea of something different and unique.
The photos posted by 4vCoupe confirmed that are both wonderful watches.
I think I should try to search for both and let's see which one comes with a good deal first.

The Explorer II is the most functionality in a value package -- if you have misgivings about the polar dial and are more comfortable with a black dial, there are plenty of black-dialed Exp II options out there (you'll also save money vs. the Polar).

However, if you always imagine a Sub when you think about Rolex and don't currently have one, it is a really difficult choice to argue with. Best wishes.

I bought a Sub first (6 digit) then added a polar Explorer II (5 digit) later. Like them both equally well.

I first saw the 16570 in a friend's second hand watch shop and could not let it go. If I had seen the 14060M, i might have bought that first. It eventually became the third rolex I grabbed. Both are solid choices.

I have both. It would be a hard choice, but I would lean towards the sub. But if you travel and need a date, the exp2 is wonderful. It is my go to travel watch and is a bit more strap friendly than the sub (IMHO). But the 2 liner 14060M.....exquisite!

Just get both, this is a devils dilemma :P

Take your time! Which one "sings" to you the loudest and most in tune? I´m a Sub fan, but have always liked the Explorer II Polar over any other dial variation! Difficult decision but, as others have posted, get both if you can!

Thanks for your reply. I had some Rolex, always Sub and GMT. The best two have been:
a) the 1st important watch, a Bluesy bought new in 1992 and kept for many, many years
and
b) a GMT Batman, bought new six years ago and still with me
try to guess which color they have in commune?
From one side I would like to remain loyal to Sub and from the other side to introduce another sporty Rolex. Black Explorer is not really an option for me, because in this case I would go for 14060M with no doubts.
To make this dilemma even more complicate, there is still an almost silent voice that tells me bluesy, bluesy, bluesy

Since you still have the GMT Batman, and you gravitate toward the color blue, neither of the references you’re looking at seem like the best choice. I think the voice inside that says “bluesy” tells it all...you should get a Bluesy (I assume from your post that you had it in the past but currently don’t). I don’t think anything else will satisfy you.

Get both if you can. Sub is iconic, the polar is the best companion with great case size, dial & movement etc.

These are my two favorite and have been an anchor in my collection. G serial sub /P serial Exp II.

Either choice is a winner, my most critical recommendation is the exp II must also have lugholes. As a perfect travel watch I always enjoy having strap options available.

If you can’t decide, just find the best deal you can for the cleanest example.
