INDUSTRY NEWS: Rolex Daytona breaks record
With the recent auction a Rolex breaks record prices....here it is.
April 02, 2009 Antiquorum, the world's leading watch auctioneer, realized an impressive total of SFr. 5,419,584 for its auction in Geneva titled "Important Collector's Wristwatches, Pocket Watches, Clocks and Horological Tools". Of the 481 timepieces offered, 109.62% was sold by value and 78.36% was sold by lot. Strong international interest came from Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Russian Federation and the United States in addition to a strong internet presence and a healthy turnout of live bidders at the Grand Hotel Kempinski this week-end. The top-selling lot of the auction was an 18k Rolex "Baguette Diamond Cosmograph" Ref. 6270 (lot 476), a very fine and rare wristwatch in 18k yellow gold, with bezel set with 28 baguette-diamonds which reached a record amount of SFr. 360,000 following fierce bidding in the auction room. LOT 476 Ref. 6270 "Baguette Diamond Cosmograph" Rolex, "Cosmograph, Oyster (Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified)", Ref. 6270/6263. Made in 1985. Extremely rare and very fine, water-resistant, 18K yellow gold wristwatch with round button chronograph, registers, bezel set with 28 baguette-diamonds, dial set with 240 diamonds and nine sapphires. Sold including buyer's premium: 360,000 SFr. I converted the currency....317,399.17 USD......wow! |

$320.000..?
Now tell me, who can tell the difference between this pleade diamond dial with sapphire hour markers and baguette bezel from one made after market..? When it comes to bling I will not pay Rolex factory set dials and bezels when I can have a better diamond setter do a better job with the SAME quality for 10 times less.! |

You would think it would be some classic like a red-dial Newman or something of that nature.....but it's bling. As far as the PP, I am not sure what it was auctioned for but the article said the Daytona broke records. I wonder who bought the watch, that info is not disclosed. |

Have to agree a totally ruined watch by the use of over the top bling.

DO NOT LIKE IT! Sorry, but I would rather look for.....
a 6538, 5510, 5508, 6239, 6263, 1665 DRSD and some nice 5512/5513, 1675 etc... and would still be under that price for a watch which I DO NOT LIKE AT ALL
Incredible price for a watch which looks as a toy..... Just my thoughts |

If I am not mistaken the 360K CHF Includes a 20% buyers premium which is added into the total price.
Still expensive but it obviously sang to somebody out there.....with deep pockets |

Its too over-the-top for a Daytona. It's meant to be a sports watch but who the heck would where something like that to a game or car race or some sports event? Not me ;)
