PP 5196 or 1815 up and down
Hi,
I am thinking about getting one of the above watches but can't decide between the two. Opinions? |

Up and down all day long.
Do some research on the Patek forum about the situation with the 5196 movement... not pretty. |

The raison d'être of the Calatrava 5196 has never been its movement. The Cal 215 has stood the test of time and proven very reliable. Each movement is built and finished to Patek standards. Sure, the calibre pre-dates the display-back craze of the last decade but personally I wouldn't fault it or hesitate to buy a 5196 because it has a historic manual wind movement in it.
I prefer the simplicity Bauhaus design of the 5196 and its direct lineage to the famous 96 over the design language of the Lange Up & Down. Having said that, Lange makes watches of spectacular quality, I'm just enamored by the less-is-more approach of the 5196 (or the 5196P if you can find one - love those Breguet numerals). |

Yes, a historic movement when Calatrava cases were 33mm and which Patek could not bother updating when the case was upsized to 37mm. Somehow Patek decided that having a huge washer filing all the empty space was fine by their standards...

Of those two the 1815 up/down. It’s a Grail piece. The 5196 is an entry level Patek.

I own an 1815 chronograph boutique and a Zeitwerk (WG Black dial). I also own Patek 5146G and 5970J
To me, Lange’s movement beats Patek at all levels, but the dial and case are what you will be looking at most of the time. So try to find which case shape you like more, which dial you prefer would be most important. |

1815 up/down is my goal. I will purchase it in a few years for my fortieth. In this particular comparison, I prefer it over the 5196 because it's more versatile. The 1815 updown will look great even in jeans and a t shirt while the same can't be said of the 5196. Also, the casebacks can't be compared. One is boring and closed, the other is a display of horological art.
