Clasp Protection

This will send the purists into a tizz but I wanted to share. A little background - the first week I purchased my new CHNR GMT II I got a scratch on the rose gold center section of the clasp. I thought if I was able to put a scratch like this on my watch in my office the first day what was my clasp going to look like after 5 years. I purchased a small sheet of the 3M clear plastic and cut out a fitted piece that covered just the center of the clasp and it worked good. One problem I had was after about 4 months the ends accumulated dirt and I had to replace.

My latest version of the cover extended the end about 2 mm over the ends of the clasp and wrapped around the end of the clasp. This not only protects the vulnerable ends of the clasp but protects the bracelet from scratches that occur when the clasp rubs against the bracelet. The warp around also prevents the dirt from accumulating under the ends of the protection - or at least you cannot see it.

I thought I would share and if you have any questions let me know. I also put the same protection on my ss clasp on my BLNR but the rose gold of the CHNR really needed it.

I purchased a precut kit from a company in Australia to do both the clasp and watch head of my new GMT Master ll so I think it's a brilliant idea. Why not protected it we put screen protectors on our phones. Now both of us can get trashed as the thread continues.

David - I just got the Batman as well. I agree - people put them on their cars and phones, why not your watch? Just because some people think it is "silly" idea, then nobody should use them. How do you like the kit?

If you covered all the PCLs with plastic you might get some judgement, but frankly I think most of us with PM oysters have all gotten the inevitable ding in the PCL of the clasp.

Perfectly justifiable IMO if you want to add a protector on the clasp. Just happy your PM watch is being worn out and about like it deserves.

After about 5 years of scratches and use, I send my watches in for service and they polish all the scratches out. Good for another 5 years of scratches.

If you want to put a protector on your clasp, do it buddy. Do what makes you happy.

It is perfect you apply wet so alignment is easy and it dries absolutely clear. You have to look close to even notice they are applied. I found this one company who claimed they are laser cut and I believe them fit is great even covers the top of the lugs. I have swam and washed the watch and they stay on, just plan about an hour to put them on a lot of little pieces and they give a few of each so if you make a mistake you have extra's however in my case they all went on first try. Send me a PM if you want the company name and the cost was under $30.00 with shipping to USA.

I wouldn’t worry about all the haters when they come along Vance, and they will. It’s your watch, therefore you do with it as you please

Me personally am too lazy to take such measures. I focus on the enjoyment of wearing the watch and figure if dents and scratches happen, I have the option to have it disappear every 10 years during routine service.

I mean, I don't think you are really going to send anyone into a "tizz". It's your watch, you are free to do whatever you'd like with it. I'd rather my watch to actually look like it's being worn/used with scratches, dings, etc. rather than ruining the look of the RG by coating it in plastic

9:1 so far...

There are enough people doing this after they saw the stickers Rolex used. Apparently the precuts sell well enough to carry their product line profitable.

It's like leaving the plastic on the seats of a new car. I could not enjoy it regardless.

I agree!
I feel that it’s each owners watch..and usually a decent outlay of cash.
Being a believer if PPF for cars, why not? A nice kit that Is precisely laser cut to fit?
I’m interested!!!

I picked up a new watch recently and it took about 2 weeks to discover the sticker was still on the clasp.

I only noticed as I saw a liquid type haze on the clasp against the yellow gold. Worried me and realised the sticker was on.

My concern is liquid and dirt getting under the protection and for dirt being moved further underneath with the liquid and tarnishing the metal.

Would this not concern you?

That’s exactly what happens, dirts get under an edge and will scour away at the metal.

The 3m works perfectly. I replace mine every couple of months. The clasp on my Submariner is unmarred when I remove the film for replacement.

Do what makes you happy. Period. It’s not for me, but if it makes you feel better go for it. As long as you enjoy the watch, that’s all that matters. Although we all have to remember, nothing stays new forever.

I’ve scratched MANY of my watches, across all brands - my wife has scratched some of them too. It happens. End of the day. It can be fixed.
