Can a single watch change your entire outlook?
So guys can you please share your past experiences with this issue. So on April 21 I picked up this beauty and ever since that day I do not want to wear anything else. As you can see from my signature line I’ve got a few in my rotation so I’ve experienced the “New Watch” feeling plenty of times where you’re all excited to wear it and nothing else but nothing like this.
Every morning I wake up and look at my watch holder where I keep 5 or so side by side and say nope I’m wearing the SDK again. I’ve even put on something else and changed my mind, and put the SDK back on. Have I changed my entire thought process from a constant adder to the collection or I’m done? I just don’t know. Never felt this way about a watch especially when I have another SD and a SubC for comparison. So it’s not like all the SDK offers is something new to me if you know what I mean. I’m used to a a Ceramic bezel, 40 mm case and the glidelock comfort so what gives?

You will have to ask yourself the context in which you purchased the other 4 watches. Did they have any meaning? Did they ever elicit any emotion? Do they serve a particular function?
I am a firm believer that watches purchased for insignificant reasons (I.e. popularity) result in the novelty eventually wearing off and any desire to wear the watch just fades. |

I really do think so - of my watches I gravitate more and more to the one that I'm still in the honeymoon phase with. Now that honeymoon could last years and years...or 15 minutes.

I know what you mean.
After I picked up a DSSD all the other Rolex watches were reluctantly moved on because I wasn't wearing them any more. |

Good point. Well I’m up to 9 and they all had a purpose, I liked and wanted them. Never bought a watch for hype or resale value down the road granted of course if and when I sell I hope to make a profit but that’s not the end game for me. I buy what I like and desire. I guess what I’m trying to say is I genuinely still love all my other pieces. It’s not like I look at them and say “Yeah that one has to go” or what was I thinking when I bought that one. I just don’t want to take off the SDK. Like ever.

I am familiar with that sentiment. I felt the same way with my DJ after buying other watches since it was my only watch for so long. Even gave away an Omega and an IWC that I never ended up using. Have you tried enforcing a scheduled rotation? |

Yea my sd4k killed most watches for me. I'm waiting if the sub will be redesigned (thinner lugs) but apart from that all other watches seem dull. I do wanna see the upcoming 62mas reissue though *gasp*

I think everyone who walked out of an AD with a new Rolex on their wrist probably changed their outlook on many things.
A veritable turning point in one’s life can do that... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It means you are a one watch guy and it's time to sell everything else.

I have kind of experienced the same thing. When I bought my two tone sub, I kept thinking of what to add next, and u wanted several other watches. I sold that sub and bought a steel Datejust Now, every now and then I will want another watch, but then I flake because I feel like the Datejust is so perfect for me. So yes, it kind of changed my outlook! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

There's always a certain fondness for a latest purchase but generally, I don't think it will change my feelings for the other watches especially because they all have various uses.

I got into watches seriously with a Sinn 556A on a finelink bracelet. Really liked that watch, but after studying Rolex for a while, I had to have a 114060. Had to force myself to wear the Sinn occasionally but never liked wearing it as much as the Rolex so I sold it.
Currently looking at the 214270 Explorer though. |

Yes its happened to me. I bought a 16618ln about 3 months ago. My SubC has been on my wrist twice in that time. I love the SubC but it looks like it is turning into an occasional beater. Struggling a little with what to do with the Sub C, I have thought of trading/selling it towards something else but I cant think of anything else that would compete with the gold sub for significant wrist time.
I have to tell you though, coming from a rotation of at least 3 Rolex models over the last few years, to basically being totally content wearing one watch has been liberating!

New pieces show how I'm evolving my preferences. When I started, I was at 42-44mm. Now, I'm most comfortable between 34-40mm.
Most style cues remain the same, other than size. |

Yes. The sign of a great watch collection is when ALL your watches each make you feel like this. Standing in front of your watchbox each morning is both satisfying but also terrifying.
The real question is whether your SD4000 is so much better or that your 4 other watches are that much more inferior. Hard to decide when you've only had it for 3 weeks, give it 6 months and see if you still feel the same way. |

Great point. Thanks for all the advice and thoughts guys. Nice to have such a great forum where just a couple of posts can enlighten me in ways I hadn’t thought of. Maybe Rolex will release something new in the upcoming months ahead to get my juices flowing again. If not other then acquiring a Sky Dweller I think I’m done.

Nice Anthony. That's a great stage to be in.
But at the same time, growing in and out of bonding with a watch I think is natural since our preferences change based on our experiences, phases in life, etc. Just nice to be in the moment of connection with a specific watch. |

It’s the honeymoon phase. When your honeymoon lasts forever, that’s when you know you’ve found the one.

Phew! For a moment I thought you meant you go out naked with a watch on the wrist when you said "you don't want to wear anything else"

Buying new things is like an addiction to many, often the next new thing is amazing and life changing. Until the next one in 6 months 2 years etc. As the informed poster said above emotive reasons can b short lived.
All of this dance is just validating how to spend obscene money on another piece of jewelry of luxury item really. Same as someone may go through to justify another pair of earrings, handbag etc. It's all good fun. |

I think yes it can. If the new purchase gives more comfort and it's probably trending at that point in time, there's a possibility one might want to stick to having it on the wrist more than all others.

Firstly the SD4K is an amazing watch. I regret letting mine go few years back. But recently I bought an Air-King to Commemorate a significant mile stone in my career... and I must say it has not left my wrist from that day. So the point is ... enjoy your special watch that makes you smile every time you put it on .... sometimes simple is best and one is enough!
Cheers
