Just got "the" text...

A good friend of mine, who's family just happens to own an AD just texted me saying "Hey are you still interested in a Red/Blue GMT?"

It totally caught me off guard, and it sucks to have been waiting for some time to receive the call and unfortunately have to turn it down.
With the uncertainty of the times it just didn't feel like the right time to spend the coin on a new watch, especially with my family as a top priority. Could I afford it, yes, but I feel having the money sitting in reserve is a much more responsible decision at this time.

Oh well, I know it's the right decision but still bummed. When the timing is right the opportunity will present itself again.

Where are these elusive watches coming from? Many have posted their calls after being on a waiting list. I have a friend on a waiting list for me because she has a good history with an AD and she has also received the call for my Hulk.

It’s only a watch. Family comes first. Wise decision.

It’s quite evident to me now that there’s clearly tons of stock and that supply was indeed manipulated to create this illusion of rarity. Especially since the factory has been closed and there’s as many incomings now as there’s ever been.

Wise decision. I guess at a time like this the ADs need the cash too hence all the watches that were previously “unavailable” are coming out of the safes. How times changed. There’s no way these watches are fresh from Rolex, the factory has been shut down for a while.

You made the right choice. Watches will be here forever and the BLRO is going to be in production for many many years to come.

In the current time its not a good idea to be dropping money like this during such uncertainty.

Sounds like the responsible decision. Good on you! The opportunity will come again. Not worth the stress - after all it is just a watch. I need to keep reminding myself of that.

Just spoke with her, and they already sold it this morning. I knew that wouldn't take very long for such a hot model.

You obviously made the right decision for yourself but i bet it still feels gutting knowing it’s been sold, human nature.

I think that at any one time, throughout the years, AD's typically have in inventory 200 to 300 Rolex watches. Sure there are usually a few reference numbers that any AD might not have, but considering the numbers of references within Rolex catalog , the company and its AD's seem to do a reasonably good job of making watches available.

Please dont tell me there is anyone on these forums that STILL believe in the fake rarity and supply rubbish? LOL

Come on man anyone believing that crap these days got rocks in their head. Its common knowledge now and confirmed by pretty much every gray dealer that all the hyped models was artificially hyped by the grays and dealers themselves.

Just got "the" text...

Right call

Piece of mind knowing you have money for food, roof, security, and emergency is much better feeling than having BLRO in this situation

If all basics covered then sure go for the BLRO but if not then I’d pass

Good decision to prioritize your Family.

Hoping the watch comes quickly when you feel the time is right.

Have to disagree. The OP sounds sincere and I will take him at his word that he turned it down out of caution and respect for his family. It doesn't remotely sound like he even considered flipping, and I don't think it's right to paint someone on this forum negatively with dumb conjecture.

What’s the point in even taking the time to write this? It benefits nobody and just brings doom and gloom I think the guy is quite right if it didn’t feel right then he absolutely did the right thing see if there’s nothing nice to say why say it??

Boring but sensible decision....I wouldn't hold my breath for that Ad to call again anytime soon

Great post and thank you for sharing, I for one understand your plight. You were right not to buy this watch, keep your cash in the bank there is likely to be a massive depression in the next few years and any non essential purchases if you feel uneasy should be halted. Well done. Plenty of opportunity to buy these watches in the future.
I'm being offered watches all the time by people trying to off load Daytonas, Skydwellers at Pre COVID prices. I tell these people to contact Watchfinder and see what they will pay for your watch. I seen quotes of less than $11k for a NIB white 116500LN Daytona.

I’ll probably be skewered for this, but here’s how I would have approached this differently.

If this was a model that I had been waiting on for a long time and as OP stated could afford it, I’d buy it and put it in a safe. If everything settles out well in a couple of months and I can feel secure about my situation, the watch comes out of the safe and goes on my wrist. It would almost be like buying it twice! If things get tight and it’s not looking like this situation is going to improve, I’d sell the watch for my cost and pass it along to somebody else.

Does it add a little bit of risk? Sure. But it seems unlikely that you wouldn’t be able to get MSRP for this model in a matter of days.

Keep in mind that the sample you are seeing on the Rolex forums of people getting offered watches are not a genuine picture off what’s going on, first off is everyone together on the forums even 1/10 if 1 percent off Rolex buyers? Secondly a lot of the people on the forums are very well connected at thier AD’s and are the first ones to be offered pieces when things start loosening up, this doesn’t mean that you’re gonna start seeing 3-4 steel gmts in the case at one time like the old days, very doubtful that any will ever make to the case, (there are the exceptions)
