TT Sub Scratching Woes

Good morning!

First post here (wutt wuttttt!!) Excited to be part of the group.

I am DYING to buy a 116613LB - Bluesey and have been worried about getting too many scratches etc.

I work at a desk and currently have a Omega GMT Great White which I love. I want to jump into the Rolex line and have been torn on this vs a DJ 41 blue dial all stainless which I feel would hide scratches (but is way diff than a 116613LB).

Any help on this and what the consensus is would be great!

Thanks!

The polished center links will pick up scratches. especially on the clasp. They actually add character to the watch. but if scratches bother you a Jubilee bracelet would be your best option. It hides them the best except on the clasp. Desk diving is tough on any watch. Too many papers clips and other sharp metal stuff to keep track of.

I had that TT Sub and it's a gorgeous watch, but yes, it scratches easily on those shiny bits. I polished them every couple of months, but I'm a bit OCD.

The watch is really flashy and it became too much for me and I sold it.

NOTHING to worry about. Obviously dont go around banging your wrist everywhere

Here is a 2015 year bought 116613LB. 5 years old now and still looks brand new.

Worn daily for the first 12-18 months. NEVER polished before - still looks pristine

It really depends on your use. If you are "desk diving" you can expect quite a few scratches on the polished center links as well as on the clasp. Almost inevitable.

Yeah, mine definitely picked them up quick, but really, I don't even notice them at this point and mine doesn't really show them when looking at the watch from the top. The only place I really notice is when I flip my wrist and look at the clasp.

If you love the watch, I say go for it. I like the DJ Blue too, but it won't scratch your bluesy itch (no pun intended) if that's what you're craving.

if it bothers you like myself, look into styx watch protection. It's for the whole watch but if you want to just protect the high traffic area like the clasp, you wont even know its there and will keep your watch in tip top shape.

There a good therapists in Florida who can help. After gaining control over OCSD (Obsessive Compulsive Scratch Disorder) you can get your new Bluesy with no risk of scratchy regrets.

Just my wry way of saying get the watch you want.

Thanks for the insight everyone. I agree, it is inevitable, and I think I can deal with the added character :) I know my other watches have the same scratches, but probably over thinking it.

I've had both the bluesy and the dj41 blue dial. The center on both definitely picks up scratches (even if your somewhat careful). I'm pretty particular so it bothered me quite a bit (I know it shouldn't, and I wish it didn't). While I enjoyed both of them quite a bit, I do love my sub with the fully brushed bracelet as I don't really worry while I'm wearing it, and that's pretty important to me. That said, I wear it the most by far over any of my others and end up saving my pieces with pcl's special occasions.

don't worry about it, wear it and enjoy it! It's like buying a performance car and not drive it because you may scratch it. Every thing can be fixed if needed. Embrace your own patina you add to your watches.

I wouldn't worry too much on scratches, just normal wear and tear.

If you are worried about scratches then don't wear a watch. I'd rather have a scratched up bluesy and rock it on my wrist that turn it down because of scratches. The first one always hurts but you get used to it.

Watches scratch, so do belt buckles and shoes.

Watches aren't meant to always look like a display case queen.

And especially the clasps that have the gold center strip. Fortunately, mine is an older version with the plain SS clasp.

Done my best to find a photo of this watch in very bright direct sun

And you still can’t see the scratches.

I have owned this ever since they released the ceramic version on the sunburst dial. Maybe 2013.

Before it was a flat blue

This watch if you tilt it at certain angles show loads of micro scratches.

If you scrutinise it with an LED or at an angle to direct light you will see the scratches

But at a glance and from normal viewing angles it still looks stunning.

Believe me I have worn this thing through everything and it’s been to the beach and got covered in sand numerous times / it’s got loads of scratches and dents and one meaty scratch on the 1st link on the PCL at the 6. Zoom in - but look. Still looks good

This pic was on a beach

TT Sub is a beautiful watch and the complains people make about it most times is that it scratches easily.

Hahaha yep - in the good old days when I could go to the pub and get a nice drink. If I recall that is a Gin and tonic Bombay Sapphire.

Loving these photos, the bluesy looks so much better in real life photos on the wrist than in a catalogue. I’m sure some swirls and little marks would look absolutely fine on it, after all the bluesy DNA is of tool watch lineage

You could have one watch as a daily wearer and one going out watch, so less likely to pick up scratches on your going out watch.

It’s the edges of desks, particularly glass desks that easily scratch up the watch, the polished centre links show it the most. The watches with brushed bracelets hide the scratches quite well IMO. So something like a SS submariner is a perfect daily wearer. Two done blue dial sub would be a perfect going out watch.

As others have said, scratches are inevitable. Here’s a closeup of my Bluesy clasp after a couple years of intermittent wear. I actually think the “patina” is kinda cool. Even with all those scratches the PCLs still shine and you can’t even see the scratches at arm’s length.

Get the bluesy; it’s beautiful and feels great on the wrist (notably weightier than ss models). But it will scratch. Mine had hairline scratches within days of owning it, and I’m careful. SS polished center links will also scratch plenty, so get what you want. And if you are sufficiently ocd, there are the watch equivalent of 3m “clear bras” for cars.
