I have previously owned a 16610 and 16613 and lugs were symmetrical on both sides.

Someone claimed that the crown side lugs are made slightly thinner to balance things out visually (the crown adds weight to the right side). Designwise it makes sense, but staring at the pictures on Rolex website, I'm not sure if it's true or just an optical illusion. In any case the difference would be very subtle.

On that photo the watch is slightly tilted, and it's taken with a wide-angle smartphone lens. That would make the left side seem bigger and accentuate any difference, just like the bezel seems too large because it's close to the camera.

If that's a watch you're considering buying online, definitely ask for better photos :)

lightly. I mean that's have to be drastically polished then

I read this but I'm not sure how much the difference would be

Have you physically measured the lugs?

no. I wish I had but I got it today and sent it today to RSC for maintenance today. It didn't really occur to me until I was looking back at the pictures. I noticed it slightly when I had it on earlier, like how a Daytona's lugs are, but then I decided to check because it was bothering me a little

I believe this is normal. Optically, helps create more symmetry. Try a search, I think there’re threads on this.

That's correct and has been on most all of the sports line up over the past 40 odd years crown side lugs are slightly thinner.

Is this true of PM references? My 116519 LN has the same lugs on both sides I think, whereas I know my 116500 had a noticeable difference.

So is it just the Daytona’s that are different on the PM front, or all references?

Yes on some PM lugs they are the same but its strange on some PM gold watches the dials are brass, while others are 18Kt gold, and many PM cases are not 100% solid.

nygo: on the new photos you posted the difference looks much more subtle, as it should be. It’s in line with what I’ve seen in similar era references, i.e. subtle enough to make you wonder if there’s a difference or not. I know that kind of detail can start gnawing at you, but it’ll go away when you realise it’s been done for a purpose.

I haven’t studied design, but I’ve done quite a bit of amateur photography, and composition works just like that. If you add something to one side (crown & guards) you need to add something to the other (thicker lugs) to make it look balanced. Just think of it as another example of Rolex paying more attention to detail than most other manufacturers. In the end it just means you have a better looking watch.

Enjoy your sub!

I cannot tell you how glad I am to have found this post. I always thought the same thing and I just thought I was crazy! I feel a little silly as it is so painfully obvious, I never considered measuring the lugs!

It's typical on a Daytona for the Crown side lugs to be slightly thinner, but not for other references.
I have bought one watch back in the early 2000's which had uneven lug widths on the bottom of the watch and i have had a replacement service case from Rolex around the same era which suffered from the same flaw and it was replaced by Rolex without issue that was not flawed.
When one comes across the issue it always manifests as a slightly wider lug at the tip on the bottom left hand corner. All the other lugs appear to be the same width.
