Discontinued Rolex Models

Can I ask the experts here to teach me a little bit about models that have been discontinued?

Also, some of the reasons behind these decisions and what normally occurs after such a move (meaning, do values shoot up, drop or simply remain the same)?

Is there a list available to illustrate these examples? Can we guess if there will be any dial or models that are soon to be axed?

Yes, I expect some of these answers to be assumptions or speculative.

Nobody knows exactly why Rolex discontinues models or what the value will be for those models that do get discontinued

The experts will know better than me but these days most sports models will hold value or increase over time. Most Others hold or depreciate over
Time.

This doesn’t mean they are investments due to you being able to make a much better return putting money in the market over 10+ years

I'd be interested too. definitely don't have the knowledge offhand and don't wait on me to do the homework :)
i just picked up a DDII even though the DD40 had some upgrades (movement/proportions).

Well the 36mm Explorer 1 was discontinued in favor the current 39mm model.
The 40mm Explorer II was discontinued in favor the current 42mm model. The Sub traditional case was phased out across the line in favor of the maxi case. I think these decisions reflect the opinion of Rolex that they improve the design and value of their product. To me the past is no indicator of what Rolex will do in the future.

The Rolex Datejust Turn-O-Graph, which entered the market in 1953, was discontinued in 2011. Some say this model was not popular, but a run of 58 years says a lot.

Wow. I knew that it had been discontinued, but I didn’t know that it had a 58 year run.

That’s crazy.

Maybe they will bring it back

They did do it with the milgauss.

(For fun- my voice to text and auto correct originally translated my post as "Try to do it with little dolls." ) gotta love technology.

Modern discontinued models:

I like the white dial milgauss

And

black ceramic gmt master

For post 2000s models;

The SD 16600 is exceptional. Different from the ubiquitous submariner and only watch connoisseur knows what that is from arms length away

The 40mm explorer is also hot in demand since we may expect some significant aesthetic change perhaps and movement upgrades with its anniversary upcoming

Here are my 5 digit references which were discontinued about 10 years ago...

These next four I suspect will be discontinued over the next couple of years...

I think these next two are safe for now...
