Back after a long hiatus...now what?

So I'm back here catching up with all of the Rolex news after my last visits in 2018, still enjoying my OP 34.

At that time, I was debating what reference to purchase next. Couldn't make up my mind, and was a little taken aback by having stepped unexpectedly into the Great Rolex Famine.

I decided to wait until I felt sure about a decision, and then...you know, life. Moved, took a new job, bought a new house, new car, etc. Then the pandemic turned most of my free time into doing projects around the house, and it occurred to me..."hey, I should do something fun, like buy a Rolex. I've got time to do my research, and why not treat myself?"

And here I find myself, apparently still in the throes of the Great Rolex Famine. Only this time around, everything I'm looking at is far more expensive than it was in 2018

So...is there any concensus at all on where this is going? I should have bought 2 years ago, that's clear. But I'd love thoughts on whether it would be advised to wait, given the current economic uncertainty, or just pull the trigger now?

Looking primarily at late 14060M's, for reference.

Thanks all and glad to be back

Welcome back. I’ve also been looking at 14060’s and the prices are approaching the MSRP of a new 114060. Look at HQMilton. They seem to get them often. The for sale forums are also a great place. There are 4 line 14060m’s and 2 liners. The two liners seem to be more popular but the last of the 14060m’s are no bargain. There are some G serial 14060’s and those are the last. I’m almost positive there are no random serial 14060’s, but there are G serial 114060’s. I’ve always thought it would be cool to have both the 14060 and 114060 both in G serials. Happy hunting,

Thanks! It's good to be back!

I prefer the 4 liners, and yeah, it is a bit disheartening to see that they're not far off prices for a 114060. Unfortunately since I'm female, the maxi case just doesn't work for me, looks like I'm wearing a brick

I passed on 2 really nice 14060M's in the mid to high $5k range two years ago, so it stings. Now I'm torn between just pulling the pin so I'm not in for any more than $7.5-8k vs. waiting to see if prices drop, given the possibility of a significant recession.

I also can’t believe how the prices of 5 digits have shot up. The rising tide has definitely lifted all boats. I really want a 14060 bad but I just can’t bring myself to pay what they are going for.

Waiting patiently for them to come back a bit.

Welcome back! Not sure what sort of time frame you’re looking at but if it’s the next couple years my guess is prices on the 14060s will either maintain or go even higher. No way of knowing for sure but that’s my 2 cents!

Just buy a full set when you find one. We can all look back to 3 or 4 years ago and say it was cheaper. So were most things not named televisions or gasoline.

Well, sure. But 2 years ago, we weren't in the middle of a pandemic and on the potential brink of a global recession. I don't think it's unreasonable to seek counsel from some of the wise folks here about whether to buy now vs. wait. I know no one has a crystal ball, but folks here know more than me about the Rolex state of affairs. Cheers!

You mis understood the tone. Im not sure why, if you want this model, you would hold out for a price drop. It could go lower but reverting back to where it was a few years ago is unlikely because the rise has been less extreme.

Definitely true! My concern is that I've got a hard stop price for something like a 5 digit Sub. I'm not sure where that line in the sand is, exactly, but I certainly can't envision myself ever paying $10k+, regardless of market value. So if I wait too long I'm potentially going to get priced right out, if this trend were to continue. Such a difficult decision.

Oh, of course. I don't see this reference ever dropping back to the $5k zone. I'd die while waiting for that

But there's a significant difference between $7-8k and, say, $6-7k. Not from an affordability perspective, but just from a fiscally mindful perspective. I don't think anyone wants to pay more than they need to; at least, I don't.

That’s my concern as well, hold out too long and end up missing out completely. That’s what has happened with the 16710s. Those are ~12k now for a decent example with no ceiling it appears. Madness

I do think the pain with the economy is going to really start setting in soon and should lead to a pullback. But you know what they say about predicting the future...

Fortunately it is not lost on me that these are still just mass produced luxury watches...so ultimately I don’t mind missing out if the alternative is getting caught up in the hype and pulling the trigger against my better judgement. There are other great brands out there

Good luck in your search

Perhaps have a trusted seller seek a good 4-liner with a service history for you.

Sometimes the difference between $7-8k and $6-7k is the need for a $1K service.

For me, mindful fiscal responsibility is just not in the cards for luxury items. I paid $7K for a 1990’s Bluesy 3 years ago - they still hover in that neighborhood. So there is hope for your budget.

If you like the 14060 I think you should seek out a good example and buy one. I don't think the market is getting any better price wise so not much point in waiting. HQmilton are great folks to deal with and I can highly recommend. I visited them in person when i was in San fran.

Welcome back and congratulations on all the wonderful changes in your life.

As mentioned a 4-line Sub would be a great pick up. Happy Hunting!
