Keep? Throw Away? Any Suggestions?
My first Rolex was in 2003 - a Datejust with Rhodium Roman dial. Unfortunately, it was stolen in 2013. Insurance covered enough for me to get a brand new model Datejust with the exact same dial.
I still have the box, warranty certificate, receipt, tissue packaging, etc. from the original watch. It's been following me around for the last 7 years. What would you do with the box and papers and such if you were me? Any reason to keep it or should I pitch the papers and sell the box? |

7 years is a long time, but I guess if the stolen watch was eventually recovered you could instantly prove it was yours. Not sure how that would work with your insurance though.
The box and papers don't take up much space, so probably not much of an isssue to keep them in storage. All that said, you could just toss them out (perhaps scan/photograph them first) - or sell the box as you suggest - and move on.

Sell box keep the papers. You can buy another box if somehow it pops up. The papers are pretty small. You can store them somewhere without much issue.

Do you live in a tent with no storage space whatsoever?!

Hi Wes, it'll probably be in your benefit if you haven't already to registered the theft with Rolex. So that if it does arrive some day in their service facility it will be flagged and held and the relevant persons notified. If you want to move on with life it's probably wise to sell the box and papers as it'll be of some value to someone but don't forget to let the insurance company know of the sale value so they can recoup what they paid out to you, just kidding.

I would sell them.
Even if the watch re-surfaces, since your insurance company paid out your original watch would belong to them (unless insurance is fundamentally different in the US?) |

Just keep them. What are you going to do sell the box for $100? You never know if the watch will resurface and the insurance company calls you to see if you want to buy it. Never know in this crazy world. 7 years is about time for that watch to be serviced. Might just pop up.

The insurance company paid out $7K for a 2003 16234. My understanding is that, if Rolex gets the watch, it will go to the Police. The watch would likely end up with State Farm. They would give me right of first refusal to purchase the watch for the amount of the payout - which I wouldn't pay. It's less about space than it is about the sadness that I feel every time I see it in the cedar chest with the watch boxes. Thanks to everybody for their feedback. I'm probably going to just keep the papers in the safe with the others and sell the box. |

Post the picture of the paper and serial number and see if you get any hits.

I got a stolen watch back 10 years later. I'd keep everything.

Based on this logic surely it's worth getting rid of the box and papers. What would you rather have?
