1975 18kt gold Daytona ref. 6265

Daytona Demand

Like almost all of the current models within the Rolex roster, the Rolex Daytona is a watch steeped in history, provenance, and surreal demand. A modern-day icon for several reasons, the Daytona is the watch all watch collectors want, and they don't just want any Daytona, they want a first series four-digit Daytona. Here at Gentleman Timepieces, we're lucky enough to have several four-digit Daytonas on offer, and here we have a 1975 Daytona ref. 6265 in 18kt gold.

Notable Features

The ref. 6265 is seen as a transitional model by collectors due to it having a mix of features that weren't always available in the first series of Daytonas. It has screw-down pushers for its chronograph that differ from the original pump-style pushers that were initially standard on the Daytona. These newer pushers differ both aesthetically and functionally. They provide the added benefit of increasing water resistance while also giving the ref 6265 a more modern look. The ref. 6265 was also the last Daytona reference (alongside the ref. 6263) to use the Valjoux Calibre 727 manually wound movement. Rolex would go on to use the Zenith El Primero in the second series of Daytonas.

The Dial

Another feature of note with our particular ref. 6265 is that it has the sought-after "Sigma" dial. This was initially brought in by the Swiss Watch Industry Trade Association in the '70s to highlight the use of gold in watches. In this particular case, it highlights that the hands of the watch are made of gold. Our example's dial is also the rarer black version with gold subdials. The black dial allows the gold subdials and hands to really pop against the black backdrop, which adds to the overall legibility of the watch and is reminiscent of the fact that the Daytona, historically speaking, was designed as a tool watch that was to be used functionally - so legibility was vital.

Condition

Our example is in excellent unpolished condition, which only adds to the watch's character as a testament to the fact that it was worn as intended. The bezel has fully retained its original sharp edge and engraved tachymeter scale. The lugs have also kept their sharp angles, as you can see in the photographs provided. The watch is also mounted on its original leather strap, which comes with its original 18kt gold Rolex tang buckle.

Collectors Icon

The Rolex Daytona has all of the necessary requirements to maintain its position as an icon in the world of watchmaking and collecting. With a design that has remained mostly untouched over the decades, a profound and memorable history, and an ambassador like Paul Newman, it is no surprise that collectors snap vintage Daytonas up as quickly as they do.
