Once again, Panerai projects a “fashion watch” image for its “entry level” (€5400) watches.

Given all the negative social medial comments on their recent snap on models, you would think Panerai would listen. But, no. Man, the brand can be so exhausting sometimes.

They are using the P.6000 3 day movement in quite a few of their models.

The snap on is a cheap move befitting of a very cheap watch, not a 5k watch with military and diving heritage. But, yeah, the lettering is level.

Yep. Part of the move from tried-and-true and cheap/easy-to-service workhorse third-party movements to new & untested in-house movements that need in-house service ($€$€).

The move to in-house is what it is. The case back is horrible, IMHO.

I would have thought that Panerai’s 100m would have been 100m and I would dive with that but I did give the a snap-on back a ‘disposable’ rating.

Looks like about 7k in Oz.

Another miss by a brand that is know for misses. Sometimes I wonder who is making the decisions and I can only speculate as to the thought process. It is not good. I am a huge Panerai fan despite everything the brand does to push me away.

To me this is like a 2wd Jeep Wrangler because most owners don’t go off road. You don’t compromise the vehicle just because a certain demographic of buyer won’t use it to it’s full potential.

Many iconic models are “only” 100m WR. Hell, the 249 is 30m. They’re differentiating their product lines, that’s all.

You’ll probably be able to get that dial in a 300m luminor with 8-day movement in due time.

Well contrary to other opinions I am not bothered by the 100m depth rating, nor the clip on back, my watches are unlikely to head underwater to this depth unless the watch falls off my wrist.

Overall, the watch looks great, add a rubber or a rustic tan leather strap and that is going to be one cool watch.

I like it and since most people don't even get their watches 'wet' it opens up a whole new clientele to the brand.

The dial looks great.

Bummer, as she was at the beach and fun ocean play yesterday. Then shower at home to clean off the sand and saltwater.

Always wear it, even while sleeping.

Been doing this for months. Regulation has not changed one iota, rock solid.

I do tend to change straps a few times a week depending on my mood / outfit.

I don't dive, but I am happy to wear a dive watch in the sea, so this PAM would get wet if I bought one.

And yes, the vast majority of dive watches don't get too dive, at best they get to splash around in the pool or go wave jumping in the sea.

I've got agree with Cru on this. I just expect more from a brand wherein every single one of their offerings is fundamentally a dive watch. The overall design and price point is fine. It's basically a blue PAM005. The problem is it can't do what a PAM005 can do.

Not defending Panerai as I don't own one (yet), but I will ask this question, does every watch have to be able to go down 300m or more when the vast majority of owners will only test the depth rating in the swimming pool if at all?

I like Panerai and hope to pick one up in the not too distant future but I don't dive and at best my watch will go for a dip in the pool or splash around in the waves whilst playing with the dog on the beach, so 300m is pointless and wasted on me, 100m will be just fine.

Exactly. I'll never dive that deep and I doubt most will. Part of paying for high end luxury timepieces is that they are over-engineered. The other part is owning a piece of the heritage of the brand. For Panerai, a brand who's entire identity is as dive watches, a snap on caseback is a cost cutting measure and it's beneath them.

Panerai is banking on the fact that most people will never know the difference (and most won't). For those of us who are really into horology, it's a disappointment. It's also not the first time Panerai has been caught cutting costs or putting less effort into their product: ie the PAM318. Imagine buying a gold Rolex from an AD and then them charging you for a bracelet adjustment or an appraisal for the watch you just bought. That's the kind of hair splitting Panerai is doing.
