QUESTION: SS Black Face Daytona for TT Sea Dweller

Hi Y'all,

New to the forum and wanted to pick your brains (long time lurker).

I have the opportunity to trade my 2016 SS black face daytona (not ceramic) for a TT with yellow gold sea dweller (brand new).

The daytona reads very small on my wrist and I wanted something that would fit a little better. However, if i am being stupid in terms of value, I don't want to consider the trade. I worry that in another 10 years that the ss daytona will be worth 10k more, whie the sea dweller would depreciate.... i know who knows.

What are your thoughts? I would also consider the SS skydweller (is that a better trade)

Which watch do you like better? Seems like you prefer the Sea Dweller.

If you are only worried about money then I cannot help you.

I know with the Daytona love on this site, most everyone will probably say don’t do it.

My take on it though is buy what you like. Value wise it’s not far off, they are pretty close. May take a small hit from the Daytona value, but I don’t think it should be enough to talk you out of buying what you like. If your being offered it and it’s what you want. I say pull the trigger.

Buy what you like, but seems like the short end of the trade.

My preference would be to keep the Daytona and add the SeaDweller or the SkyDweller. I'm not one to worry about the value as that will change over time for all watches, there was a reason you bought the Daytona, have those reasons for ownership changed? If you have to sell the Daytona for the new watch, is there someone in your circle of Friends / Family that would like the watch and you could sell it to them, or Here on TRF. If you're really worried about values then selling here would likely net you more than trading to your dealer. Dealing here and / or to your friends ensures the Daytona gets in the hands of an enthusiast and not someone only looking for status and value.

in terms of $ valuewise either the current or future bet all lean to the ss daytona, but of course you should go for the watch you want.

If your decision is based on value then keep the Daytona.

Tough call, if were solely based on preference of watches, I would probably choose the SD43.
However, there are a few factors to consider for me, namely the risk of finding the SD43 uncomfortable due to the caseback, something that can be exacerbated by the gold.
The Daytona is the more flexible watch, and much harder to reaquire. I would keep the Daytona.

I wouldn't make this decision based on the internet, I would need to see and feel the SD43 on my wrist before I could even consider this.

Wear what you suits you, but if you haven't been collecting watches for long you may find that your taste in watches including their ideal size will change. If you are a seasoned collector or have large wrists go for it.

Value wise those two watches typically trend in opposite directions. Daytona goes up, Sea Dweller goes down.

It is up to you on which you perceive is a higher value since you'll be the one wearing the piece.

Have you tried on the TT Sea Dweller? Are you certain it's the watch for you?

Very few Rolex models can compete with the SS Daytona on price appreciation. If you don't enjoy the piece, it may be worth trading but I would only do so if you're certain the incoming model is what you want. If trading blind, I would personally prefer the SS Sky Dweller which is more likely to hold value than the TT Sea Dweller.

Than you all for the thoughtful responses. A lot of good points made. The SS daytona is a beautiful watch, just a little small for my wrist/hand size.... i'm 6'4"+. Although it's slightly small, i think i will hold onto it and splurge another day for a bigger watch. Don't want to be tempted/rushed by a trade.

Thanks!

Keep the Daytona. No brainer. Sea Dweller won’t tank but it won’t appreciate either whereas we’ve all seen the Daytona going only one way and that is upward.

Many will say don’t worry about value, get what you like, blah blah. To a certain degree, I would agree. However, don’t completely disregard value. I do believe that the black Daytona is a wayyyy better watch. Not a fan of tt SD. I’d try steel SD43 personally. Even then, I wouldn’t do it but if you need a Rolex, that’s a larger watch. Omega, Tudor and many others make larger chronographs as well.

Since you mention it prominently in you question, the value retention and appreciation concerns immediately disqualify this trade...

I would hold on to the Daytona and save up for the SD. The SDTT will be readily available when you’re ready. By the time you save the money you may find something you want that’s totally different. Good luck and enjoy the collecting journey!

If retained value is not important I would get the SD 43. I think the pre-ceramic Daytonas have lost their desirability, for me at least.

I owned that era Daytona in the apparently more desirable white, its nothing earthmoving as a chrono or a Rolex, but that’s me. Buy a Speedmaster Pro and you'll scratch the chrono itch.

So take the trade and order a new Daytona at the same time because it sounds like you're dealing with an AD -- so now's your chance. When it arrives in a year or two, then decide on keeping the SD43.

I think you would ultimately regret trading away the 116520 black dial Daytona. That is such a fierce and timeless watch.

sell the daytona, put the money in mutual funds.
for sure, in 10 years it will be worth 10k more.

If the Daytona is too small for you, go for a SS SD43 or SS SkyD.
