General Consensus on DJII?
What is the general consensus on the Datejust II? Relatively short lived and proportionally larger than the DJs. Do you consider it a future sought-after collectible?
Picture of mine below. I purchased it as my first Rolex so it has a bit of sentiment. I have since purchased a BLNR and a Zenith 38mm EP. After wearing these the DJII feels fairly large. I think it fits me OK but it's definitely on the borderline. Anyways, I just wanted to get thoughts on here as I'm considering selling but I'm on the fence about it. TIA! |

Had a DJ2, sold it.
Had a DJ41, sold it. Buying a DJ36 this week. The watch looks large, but no larger on your wrist than most of the pics I see on here regularly. |

Tried II on, too big, 36 on too small, 41 on, just right!

Personally love the DJII and DDII and would not be selling it if that was my DJ. Also the blue dial with stick markers makes it a keeper.

I love that particular DJII - the SS with the blue face is timeless. I prefer the 36mm but I am a wimp. It looks good on your wrist.

Similar to you, I’ve held on because I do think it’s a future collectible with such a short run.

Bloated. DJ meant to be a dressy watch. Looks best at 36mm.

DJ2 is to my eye one of the best DJ’s ever produced.
I have four in the collection and am wearing the blue dial same as yours as I type this. The price on these has already been climbing on the second hand market, probably for two reasons. Firstly the price rises on the 41’s have pulled DJ2’s upwards with them, and secondly the unique sporty look of the dial, particularly the baton dial variants, makes them essentially like a modern day wideboy, and just look at the prices on those now on the vintage market. I will never part with the four I have. They’re just too special and I would strongly recommend that you hold onto yours. Especially as it’s a blue dial. It’s already an appreciating classic and they’ve not long been discontinued. They are only going to become more sought after more valuable as the years roll by. |

I thought it was a great watch and sold it at the wrong time as the 41 had just been released. I like the looks better than the 41 personally.

Think that depends on the wearer’s wrist size. DJ 36 looked too small on me so I sold mine and added the 41 and a DJII. The II is very modern and sporty and my 41 is more elegant. I love having both styles.

I own the identical DJ2 in the original post.
I believe this model was discontinued because the "consensus" was that many Rolex lovers did not like the fatter markers, bigger/beefer size, the blingier fluted bezel... The segment of the watch community that LOVES the DJ2 loves it for all those exact attributes. So if you love the fat markers, larger proportions and the more pronounced fluted bezel then IGNORE the consensus. Don't sell it and appreciate that it's discontinued but you own it.

I prefer the DJ 41 mostly for the "slender" markers. I can see more of the blue dial! Swiss Made/6 o'clock position is also a little cleaner with the coronet. Wear what you like.

I like it! Was a gift from my parents so I wouldn’t sell it, still enjoy it these days. May get a fresh new bezel for it though as mine’s a bit worn.

I owned the DJ2, two tone Wimbledon dial. Sold it because is just looked too chunky for my eye. I always felt the watch did not belong in the "sport" category or 'dress" category. So it was kind of lost. I like the DJ41 better, but even so, I think the 36mm version is the classic.
I do not think this model will be any more collectible vs. normal Rolex value appreciation. But my crystal ball is a bit foggy this morning

Thank you all for the feedback! When I purchased the DJII, I was fortunate to know a grey dealer that had all 3 blue versions (36mm, 41mm and DJII). DJII has the best presence IMO and although it does wear large it still has a classic look.
If I do sell I will probably put the money towards something else. Though, I'm thinking it's worth having a DJ in the collection. DJII is technically my dress piece. Although, my type of dress is largely business casual -- which I think a DJII fits in quite well. I think I'll eventually pick up a proper dress piece for formal occasions (i.e., thin simple watch on a leather strap like a PP Calatrava or a JLC MUT). |

General Consensus on DJII?
To each his own.
When the DJII came out in 2009 I did not liked it at all, way to big and no good proportions. Kept that feeling for a long time but at some point that changed and the DJII started attracting me. The big fat (eye catching) bezel, stunning!. Together with the 3136 movement which I prefer over the newer generation, reasonable price level and dial choices makes it a great DJ reference option!

Fan of the watch but really can't recall any regular production DJ that became collectible unless it was stamped 'Tiffany & Co'

Since most of the current readers on the forum never owned a DJII then they just parrot what they have heard. I think both DJII and DDII will have a following because the watches where bolder. The new DJ41 is only 39mm which makes a more classic presentation, but it is a small watch especially if you are a bigger guy. The DJII just is more metal so it stands out more and I wouldn't call it bloated or out of proportion, it's just the market swang back to a smaller watch. I also think it makes more sense for Rolex to make smaller watches as they try to deliver a watch size that fits in all markets and even closer to unisex watch sizes.

I've always loved the look of the DJ but 36mm was too small for me so I was excited when the DJII first came out. I would have bought one but they were not offered on jubilee bracelet so I passed.
When I saw the first picture of the DJ41 with the blue dial, fluted bezel, AND jubilee I was all over it. When I look at the DJII now it looks bloated. |

If you have the wrist for it, it’s a great watch. The larger markers is what I always liked about mine

I love my DJII and wish I had bought an additional model with an arabic dial while they were new. No interest in a DJ41.
