Is it still the same watch?

A man buys a Rolex watch and wears it every day. The case gets very scuffed up, so before he gifts the watch to his son, he gets both the case and crystal replaced.

The guys son takes very good care of the watch and keeps the case in good condition. However, when it comes time to give the watch to HIS son, he realizes the movement is damaged, so he replaces the movement, and gives the watch his father gave him to HIS son.

QUESTION: is it still the same watch?

IMO give it to him original condition, let him experience it for a bit then get it serviced. Then he gets to see it best of both worlds.

I'd say with the exception of a few replaced parts, yes. It is the same watch.

Yes IMO
Its the history behind the watch in your case that counts.

if this is a philosophy question then the moment the watch is used it is not the same watch. However these kinds of discussions are normally engaged by boring scholars or people with way too much time, just for the sake of arguments w/o real actual interest in the results, which would go nowhere anyway :-)

practically it is very rare for the whole case and/or the bracelet needed to be replaced, so if the watch still roughly looks the same then you can say it the the same watch from your grandfather.

Not the exact same watch... but obviously it is still a watch and still a Rolex.

My question is: If you replace Mick and Keith, is it still the same band? Is it still The Rolling Stones?

And, is your answer consistent with how you answered the watch question?

No, the case, entire movement, and crystal is different. However, its ver rare that thay would replace an entire movement and not just parts. Is this hypothetical? I have had my watch 20+ years and its all original and I don't pamper it. There have been Rolex in my family 30 years and beat like you would not believe and in the 8-10 rolex in my family, no one has every had an entire case replaced and the entire movement replaced. Thats goes for one explorer II that fell 40 feet (was mangled but still working-and did not require an entire movement replaced nor the case).

Why replace the movement, unless it is completely worn to metal fragments?

I've read the letter that Rolex sends to those who don't service their watches for decades and are therefore unserviceable.

Those instances are quite rare, I would assume.

Your body replaces most of your cells every 7-10 years, are you still the same man?

It's the sentimental value. The watch as a whole itself.

The sentiment is there but not the original watch, in my opinion. Personally, if I was to receive my father's watch, I want it in the condition he wore it, not with all his experiences wiped from it.

If the case has the serial, and then the case is replaced, then no it's not the same watch.
