Bb58 blue and black vs 214270

Hey folks,

I am supposed to get the 58 in blue soon, but my AD offered me a new 214270.
I had the 114270 for 3 years and regret deeply for selling it. I tried the 39mm while I had the 36mm and found it very bloated and not appealing. But now I thought, maybe it's due to the fact that I had the 36mm and it will grow on me if I have it?
Would you take a 214270 over both of the bb58? One watch vs 2. One Rolex vs 2 Tudors...
Decisions decisions...

I had a 214270 a few years ago and sold it for a 114060 Sub ND. No regrets. Just picked up the BB58 Blue. I say go with what you want not what is immediately available if you don’t love it.

I had a 16610 and 114270, sold both for a 114060, ended up not buying the 114060 because when I saw it in real life I was terribly underwhelmed...
Then I decided on the 58 because it was incredible in real life IMO. And I have a turtle as a beater in blue... So as actual daily, the 58 is the only one in my collection at the moment.

They're both pretty much going to be available in the next few days-weeks and the idea of the 214270 is a very recent one... Really not sure what to choose

The 214270 is too bloated. Having owned a 214270, 114270 and both Black and Blue 58's my feedback:
1. The 114270 is the most comfortable and stealth.
2. The BB58 blue is the most fun, and wears very much like vintage sub.
3. The 214270 wears much larger than 39mm due to the smaller bezel and large dial. These should be 37.5 and would be great.

Go with whichever one speaks to you when you see it. You’ll know.

Thanks for the input, I agree about the comfort and stealth of the 114270 I felt the same and wish I never sold it... Well. I am not sure if you meant that you have both black bay 58 and blue bay but I agree that the 58 wears like an old sub and is pretty similar to my previously owned 16610 except that I prefer the Tudor for having less of a deep case back than the 16610.

I have a 39mm exp and a bb58 blue.... if I had to get rid of one of these two, it would be the exp. but I do have other Rolex watches in my collection.

Great points, and #3 should be stressed!

The 214270 wears bigger than a 114060, IMHO, due to perceived dial size. Back to back with OP39, the Explorer 1 wears bigger despite both sharing the same midcase.

Should have kept the Explorer 1 36mm. My choice of the 3 would be the blue BB58.

I would certainly not say the 39mm Exp wears bigger than any super case Rolex. Having owned both, the 214270 is more comfortable hands down, but that is relative, the Sub is pretty darn comfy too. I am in the other camp. I had a 36mm Exp and while the dial proportions were nice, as a package it was too dainty. The modern sizes perhaps have clouded my perception, but I’ve sold my Rolex’s and kept only the 214270 Mk1 which I wear 3-4 days a week with no regrets. I love that it’s a little quarky but still elegant. To each their own.

i am a little tired of the "its a rolex therefore it must be better" opinions

i have rolex and tudor in my collection and think a collection has room for both on their merits

i tried on the explorer 39mm before xmas when RRP was £5000 - left it as the watch did not sing to me

i picked up the BB58 blue on bracelet 2 weeks ago for £2760 and in my view it is a stunning watch and a bargain if any watch is - i had pre paid but could had my money back had i not loved it - no chance of that once i put it on my wrist

ignoring price i would still rather wear the BB58

no one can decide for you - try both and buy the one you love irrespective of price - not sure i would buy both BB58's though

It depends on what's in your collection but that factor aside, I'll take the Rolex.

Agreed completely, I love Rolex, but after owning a few of the original BB58's and now a BB58 Blue, you couldn't pry that thing away from me if you tried.

For the price it is an unbelievable watch and a bargain for what you are getting imo.

I'd either source a 14270/114270 again or pick up a BB58 Blue if I were you

Try them both on and see what speaks to you! Both are great watches.

I just sold my BB58 (black) and replaced it with a 214270 and have no regrets whatsoever. IMO I find the fit & finish on the Rolex to be a step above (as it should be).

I have both, and I really think they are close to perfect.

The 214270 is svelte and perfectly proprtioned. It's beauty is in it's simplicty.

The BB58 is also near perfect. It is the perfect size, and has a wamth to it. It's a perfect marriage of classic and modern design.

I recommend getting the 214270 first.

These could be a perfect 2-watch collection.

I’d get the Explorer if faced with the same proposition. The BBs are fine watches no doubt, but their vintage inspired aesthetic means they’re not as versatile as the Explorer imo.

Quality wise the Rolex is hands down better for me in comparison to my BB (GMT), but the the BB was half the price so it’s not an apples for apples comparison.

I can’t say how the Explorer wears in comparison to the 58, but generally speaking the Explorer is a very comfortable watch. The case is well sized, the weight is good, the bracelet is nice to wear and the EasyLink allows on the go adjustment. The dial size is bigger than the 40mm Sub when side by side, but on the wrist the Explorer wears smaller than the sub for me.

Love the BB58 blue. I knew I would like the watch, but not as much as I now do after getting it.

I have a Sub and DJ36 if that matters.

But really they're apples and oranges. I can see both in a collection. So really depends on what you currently have and what you want to bring in first. Both are great.

Good luck either way.

I concur. Specially on #3 - it wears larger than a 6 digit submariner. Was close to getting the 214270 a year back but ultimately settled on a Black dial 36mm OP because of size. Due to the dial vs bezel size, they tend to wear much larger. This feels more like a 38-39mm watch imo and the new Explorer more like a 41mm.

The golden rule is to have at least one Rolex in your collection before you start picking Tudors. Just so you don't have that itch of "it's not a Rolex".

Have to respectfully disagree... as an owner of 214270 and SubC, the sub definitely wears much larger than the explorer. Like not even close IMO. Explorer much more comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist due to smaller case size. Wears more like DaytonaC.

214270. I frequently think about selling off everything and just keeping that one.

Tough call, by a small margin I’d pick the Explorer. Just has so many of the basic Rolex design cues I happen to love.
Matte dial, lots of lume, 3/6/9 numerals, oyster bracelet and case....

Someone posted above that if you are going to own one nice watch, in deciding between a Rolex and Tudor, most will go with the Rolex as long as the price is not a major hindrance. If someone already owns a Rolex or two, then a BB58 is a nice addition to an existing collection.

In an ideal world, you would get both the Explorer and the BB58.

As someone who already owns an Explorer and a few other Rolex watches, I have thought about adding a BB58. However I may wait until the BB58 craze dies down a bit. I expect in a few years, it will be available with a discount.

I would pick a BB58 blue because of the color and the value for the money
