Am I destined to lose money on a 18k watch?

I am thinking of buying a day date 40. I keep seeing used (36mm) ones for 8000-10k. Am I destined to lose money by getting the solid gold piece. At least my ss wstches are breaking even and actually going up in value. It doesn’t seem to be a smart move to buy one for 37K from a trusted, seller only to have it deprecate significantly.

If you see a 36mm DD for 8-10k it's 30-40 years old

DD 40 is a newer model. Cannot find for 8-10k.
Those are older DD36mm which are amazing value money.

You don’t buy a DD as an investment, you buy as something to enjoy wearing. Other than the brief DD41 or a few odd rare pieces, they will all generally slowly slope downwards as it’s the kind of piece most people who can afford one would prefer brand new. Sounds like you can’t afford to lay out 37k for a watch if you’re worried about this sort of thing, especially a DD

Yes, in most cases, when you walk out the door it will lose value.

Nobody should be buying a piece of luxury jewelry with the idea that it will somehow always be worth at, or more, than you pay.

Ha! Luckily, I can pretty much afford anything that I want (within reason). Now possibly I don’t see the value in the piece to take the depreciation hit!

Depends on how much you buy it for but I will break even at worst and maybe make a few grand from each looking at the prices today.

Bought YG one for $27k BNIB and RG one for $28k BNIB.

My RG Skyd was $33k BNIB. Now they are all over $44k. 100% will make money on this one

But as the others have said I never bought these to make money. But the tide and hype in Rolex lifts ALL models.

Yes and... 8-10k will definitely not be a good one...

If 36mm I'd go 18238 as the 'oldest' since you still have the 3155, but a good one with little wear on the bracelet will be 13-15k€

In my view if you are concerned about some depreciation on effectively a new fashion accessory then you should be putting your money elsewhere. Your initial outburst exposes some insecurity.

Buy it and enjoy it.
You might lose a bit, but you’ll have the pleasure of wearing it.....it’s only money

you should probably refrain from buying a PM watch, never a sound investment.

Me, I don’t care I just buy them because i like them. Resale does not influence my purchasing decisions.

Buy it then....or don't if you don't want it. But yes it will probably lose money over time.

A car loses money and most people sell their car at some point and take the hit, but no real need to sell a watch unless you hit tough times, but then if you go from being able to "pretty much afford anything" to having to sell your possessions, a watch will be the least of your worries.

Yes.

And it’s true for 99.99% of all watches made today. Solid gold pieces being no exception.

I agree with pretty much everyone else's sentiments, but to add to (and maybe ease?) your thoughts, it's only a gain or loss if you sell. If you don't envision doing that in your life time than what it's value is in a 2nd hand market is irrelevant.

Buy pre-owned to minimize loss.

Also, stop thinking of watches as investments.
If watches are such hot investments, then Wall Street would cease to exist.

If you can afford it and you want it then buy it. If the value of your watches is based on the market price then you probably shouldn’t buy PM as they are not as good as retaining price as SS is. But if “you can afford pretty much anything” then you should buy what makes you happy. If your happiness is determined by the resale value then you should probably pass on a Day Date.

In my opinion a DD is not a watch you would sell unless you really had to.

Exactly that Larry but today Rolex watches are now little more than investment this or that today by many.

Buy an excellent pre-owned piece (many seem to have been safe queens) and in the 90% range you know that X$ go out now and X$ will turn back if/when needed. No PM Rolex will make you gain.

Buying from an AD, yes, you will lose money. Shop very wisely with trusted sellers here on TRF, you will save a lot and still get a perfect watch...

A used 6 digit 36mm DD should retain its value. You might lose a little if you decide to sell , but you shouldn't lose much.

When do you intend to sell it?

Buy pre-loved at the right price and you'll stay even. Buy new or pre-loved at the wrong price and you'll lose. It pays to take your time and look for the right situation in which to buy.

It's only a loss if you sell it. Simple answer is just keep it forever and forget about how much it may be worth.
