Easy incoming... just pay the price.
So, a trusted leader in our organization was hitting a 20 year milestone. And one of our owners, who grew up with him, knew his lifelong dream was a Rolex Sub Date.
And that owner... yearned for a Hulk. That owner had tried the "Develop a relationship" game with a local AD... buy a PM at minimal discount, buy gee-gah 300% margin diamond bracelets, etc., only to get "on the list". As the 20th anniversary approached, I cut to the chase. "Look... DavidSW has the watches, give me the go-ahead and I'll lock them in, send a wire, and you'll have them tomorrow at market price". And we did. Next day, DOUBLE INCOMING, and two happy friends with their minty new subs!!! And a Wiha 1.5mm for my office desk drawer BARELY beat the watches to our dock, in time to adjust both bracelets. |

Very nice. I happen to agree with your stance. I’m done asking a jewelry store for anything.

Did you not expect to get two watches that you paid for? I'm confused.

Basically exactly what I did. My A D who I have a looooong extensive relationship with told me he could not promise a Sky Dweller in the next 2 years. Thats after engagement rings, other jewelry and 5-7 Rolex's he still couldnt promise me one.
Thats why I always go to my other A D, Tony Geha/Just Rolexes

Keep feeding the grays and the waiting lists at the AD just keeps getting longer.

To me it depends on the price. If you pay 1-3k more on the gray, easier to justify. Paying for the convience and getting it now. If you are almost paying 2x the amount like for the white dial Daytona, I just can’t see it. I have done it for older models, not new, but would have to see the deal before I make a judgement.

No of course not. I was referring to his massive like inventory and always having what an A D should have but never does.
So instead of calling/texting my normal AD and wasting time because I know the answer before I ask I just email Tony instead and save time.

Well what else can one do? Listen I have long relationship with my AD. Probably over 100k but he has gotten 1 Sky Dweller in 2 years. I typically dont ever buy new models when I go grey and we all know theres no "list" for used. So while I think there is merit with these 2 thoughts every situation is unique

Ive stated in the past that building a relationship with a trusted seller has its benefits just like with an AD. Trusted sellers dont always get what there asking price wise. So they can in some ways be comparable in price when buying brand new and paying tax. If its a hot model or rare model are you going to pay a premium above and beyond that? Of course. You can always go the other route, wait years and years and still get nothing or start over with another AD that will make you buy stuff you dont want. So at the end of the day you may end up spending close to the same but have zero wait. Just my thoughts. Blast away.

I don’t agree with this at all, not when a forum member tells us he recently inquired with their AD for a SS GMT and the AD reportedly responded with it would require a 100k purchase history. Yeah if I truly want a GMT I’ll hand over 15k to the grey and call it a day rather than be persuaded to hand over a nice yearly salary for the right to put down another 10k

That screwdriver must be ancient old....it still says made in W-Germany! When did Germany reunite again? Early 90s?
Glad it worked out for everyone and that both have their dream watches!

I love Rolex as much as anyone else on here but for grey market prices there are just so much more interesting pieces from other watchmakers. YMMV.

These threads always seem to breakdown into never go gray versus waiting for your AD. When inventories increase gray dealers will have your watch at a discount. With current Rolex demand at the retail level, there isn't enough inventory for everyone who wants a certain reference. Therefore the secondary market prices are greater than retail. How long are some you guys going to wait? We are hearing about people spending $$$$ and still can't get the model they want. If spending isn't working then how is waiting going to do anything to get you that reference you want? I also love the made in W Germany on the screwdriver. Probably cost too much to re tool the stamping machine.

Unification was in 1989, but not all products were immediately updated.
Talking about greys and ADs, it seems that there is no right answer, being asked to spend 100K before getting a watch is simply foolish.

Grays were around long before the hot SS bubble blew up and they will be around long after it pops. If you peruse the for sale section and go back 5-10 years you will see the same trusted grays here selling Hulks for < $8k and 6 digits subs for $6.5k before it was cool to have a Rolex to show off on social media They provide a legit secondary market. |

Congratulations to your friend!
Not something I’d ever entertain though. Hopefully it was atleast a new watch. Not one that someone bought in 2016 for 7k and then sold to dsw for 12k and then sold to your friend for 15k. |

I haven't bothered with an AD in years. Not going to spend money on something I don't really want to maybe get what I want.

The thing that really bugs me is the service.
While I’ve heard many great stories, just last week I purchased my first rolex at an AD and the experience was very underwhelming. Whole process took around 15 minutes. Sales rep thanked me for the purchase and that was it. Followed up with the rep afterwards through email in hopes of starting a long term relationship with an AD but he never got back to me (After initially responding very actively prior to my purchase). Grey dealers it is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
