Would you do this trade?

Hi All,

I have a 2017 Submariner Date, black bezel, black dial. It’s been sat on a watch winder for about 6 months, I hardly ever wear it.

I have always preferred the pre-ceramic sports models, particularly the Explorer 2 polar (16570).

I have been offered a 2011 Explorer 2 polar with 3186 movement, Rolex rehaut and random serial number. The seller of this watch values it in the region of £7950. The watch has had 1 previous owner, comes with box and papers and has been recently serviced by a Rolex trainer watchmaker and has recently been professionally polished - the watch looks brand new.

A link to the watch is here:

Rolex Explorer 2 II, 16570, 2011, 3186 Cal, Random Serial, Full Set, UK Watch.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203068500172

Is the trade a fair one do you think?

My Sub is in very good condition and I bought it from new from Goldsmiths in Newcastle. My watch comes complete with box, papers, spare links etc.

Thanks,
D.

I personally wouldn't but you don't wear the sub. Get something you'll wear.

bad trade

have you have a five digit before? You will end up wearing it on another strap.

What are you wearing instead of the Sub?

Have you tried on the explorer 2? I have an explorer 2 polar 16570 as my daily watch. If it is your only watch I say keep the sub because it is a better all around watch. Also I wouldn't trade a watch I bought brand new for a second hand watch that has been polished.

Fair trade as long as the other watch is pristine and a full set. Which it is.
Aaaand you not enjoying your Sub anymore. So, watch for watch....

I prefer a pristine 5 digit sport Rolex to a 6 digit. Id go for it. Polar explorer is a special watch, their value is only going up.

Doesn’t sound like a good trade explorer price sounds a bit high to me and a quick search finds the same watch in the 6k range

Not a good trade IMO. I’d keep hold of the sub. Although I think the explorer is a great watch and an excellent alternative in the way of sports pieces. The sub will always hold its value and be forever timeless.

It's all about that strap. Some love it.
Some hate it. The rest just don't understand.
It's not vintage so you can forgive it's shitiness nor is it a new style which whilst heavier is far better.
It's on its own.
Sub, GMT , exp 2 , exp. From that era they are all the same.
Stick with your watch.
I hope one day you understand

Cheers
A

Trade if you get serious cash as well. You would be better off selling it separately and then buying it. Also in 2 weeks I have a feeling your sub value is going to go up.

Give up a 3 year old Sub for a 9 year old Exp II ?? I would not, but you have to be happy.
I sold my Sub a few years ago, have regretted since.

No way. Don't even consider that trade. Normally I say do whatever makes you happy, but that deal is way off the mark.

My sincere advice is that you never sell or trade a Rolex. It may hurt the wallet but just buy the Explorer 2 outright

the 16570 polar has been hyped to death by the watch pundits because it was a bargain at a time and for a good reason: it is after all a poor man's GMT with the same exact 24hr hand and case size, no rotating bezel, on top of the terrible bracelet and clasp compared to the modern version.

two or three years ago, it was a decent value proposition but today it is absolutely not worth what you are willing to give up. that dealer is trying to skin you alive three times over by overvaluing his piece, undervaluing yours to resell it at a much higher markup later since a modern steel sports rolex is so easy to move. just sell your sub yourself if you don't wear it anymore and look for a better deal.

How do you not see what a bad trade this is on so many level? An iconic Rolex model for one that most enthusiast aren't interested in as their primary watch?? The dollar value of the 2 watches as an even trade??? The age of the watches?? To even consider this trade sounds silly. I wish I could find more people to trade with, like you!! Don't do it!!!

It might be nothing more tan an unfavourable camera angle, but the bevel on the outer edge of the bezel looks rather wide. My eye keeps being drawn to it. I have the 42mm Polar. It has the polished outer bezel edge but it is at right angles to the case and is much more subtle.

And the seller thinks it's worth £7950? Try looking on C24. They are being offered at somewhat less and are probably selling for less still.

If you have a six digit Sub Date, the five digit Polar may feel comparatively tinny and flimsy. Particularly the bracelet. The five digit bracelets were IMO a bit of a joke for the MSRP when they were on sale at ADs. Of course, the "vintage" view does not necessarily regard this kind of thing as a negative.

If the 40mm Polar sings to you (have you had a good look at the 42mm Polar? It's good) and you want to do the trade, and your Sub Date is in good condition, I'd be looking at something in the region of £3-4K coming in your direction, depending on what the Polar is worth (which ain't remotely £8K).8

If I was a gambler I'd also put money on you being on the look out for another six digit Sub Date once you have the 40mm Polar and the honeymoon has run its course.
