They provide an alternate source to purchase goods (including watches) other than from a factory authorized dealer or an individual. They obtain goods directly from dealers, from individuals who have purchased the goods themselves, or other grey market dealers.

They sell "new", unworn, and preowned merchandise. Quality among these dealers varies and one is wise to become informed as to their reputation from previous customers through, for example, this forum's references to their business from forum members.

Their prices are usually negotiable and depending on market conditions may be higher or lower than the manufacturers recommended retail price.

You know it’s probably easier to type in “what is a grey dealer?” in google rather than creating a thread in a forum that you’ve been a part of for 8 years

Tough crowd! Lefthook, a gray is someone that sells (and buys) watches, but they are not an authorized dealer. An example of an authorized dealer would be a jewelry store in a mall. I am not familiar with Canada but if you want to find an Authorized dealer check out the Rolex website. A gray dealer is an independent business. There are several on TRF that are excellent, reliable, reasonable. Best of luck buying your new watch and don’t forget to post pics!!!

Dealers who can get you what you want without BS and fast. Sometimes over MSRP and sometimes below.
The big guys provide excellent service

In the weird post-2016 Rolex world, they're resellers who provide trustworthy liquidity to flippers, but many also have strong relationships with multiple ADs, allowing them consistent access to otherwise unobtainable pieces, and typically will sell them to anyone for the prevailing market price.

In other words, Grey dealers are how ordinary people can still get hot Rolexes without being wealthy, incredibly lucky, or being an AD simp. Sadly for Canadians, Rolex shipments into this country are lower due to the small market and relative value of our currency making MSRP sales less profitable, and buying them from US greys gets you major taxes and fees (you'll be charged a quadruple whammy of currency exchange fees, relatively higher MSRP in USD, 13% sales tax, and then customs fees on both the price and previously mentioned sales tax). Therefore, even the greys here don't have too much product at reasonable prices. Toronto regional grey dealers include Sun Time, Johny Watches, and Bill LeBoeuf Jewellers (in Barrie). Watchfinder and Van Rijk have excellent selection but their prices are above market.

A grey dealer is where you need to pay full price for a watch but receive proper VIP experience for your luxury purchase, as opposed to an AD where you can get watches for a discount (aka msrp) if you are willing to hunt for it, wait for months/years and suffer terrible customer experience and a bunch of dodgy sales practices. You get what you pay for after all.

Middle men, who add cost to the buying process by channeling new watches to the buyers willing to pay the highest prices

This reduces quantity of watches available from ADs, lengthening waitlists
