If you like it, want it and can afford it buy it.....

They are great watches

Which Royal Oak Chrono?

There are many of them

If its just the Royal Oak and not one of the offshores myself Id pass BUT
many love the watch! I am just not a big chrono guy and if I am going to
go with a AP Chrono is will be RO Offshore....

Let me start by giving a tip: my contacts tell me alot of AD's (not boutique's) in the US are offering up to 40% discount on the standard AP RO & ROO'S- NOT the limited editions.

Even before the economy was in this state I was offered a 30% discount in Venice in 2005 from an AD for a 15300, but had just bought a Yacht Master, so didn't purchase.

Because of the design RO & ROO's have issues. Where the bezel meets the gasket, they are dust magnets. Because of the thickness of the case & bezel, the ROO's are prone to attracting dents/dings. The crowns are not as "tight" as a Rolex- especially the triplock, so don't make one confident when swimming or even showering.

The hornback leather straps are fragile. Considering one baby croc is killed to make one strap, they should be coated on something that makes them robust, but they aren't. I switched to bracelet after a month because it was showing signs of wear. Having said that, I do tend to wear my watches 24/7.

The early 15300's had troublesome movements & the chrono's get criticized because the hour hand "jumps" when resetting.

Now after all that, I have to say the ROO & Rolex SD are the most complete watches I have ever owned. When I used to wear them I just couldn't stop smiling.

The AP RO Chronograph is one of my two favourite chronos, but it just loses out to the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chrono.

Back to the AP, it is a lovely watch, i feel it has a better look and feel than the offshores, the dial is more balanced and the size isn't as bad, if i was in the market to buy a chrono it would definitely be on the list, although as i said have a look at others as well as there are so many to choose from these days, and if the AP RO is for you then you'll come back to it even more determined
