Am I crazy?

I’m a long time lurker that just registered.

I just traded my 2018 yellow gold submariner for a never worn Hulk with the new style warranty card. My Patek Philippe dealer happened to get it on trade in from a good customer when one of his Pateks came in. In exchange for my gold sub, I received the hulk and a little cash. I won’t say exact amounts but we all know what these watches are trading for right now and a never worn hulk is worth almost as much as a used gold sub.

There are several reasons I went ahead with this deal.

-For one, I’m not really feeling the new Cermit.

-The gold submariner was my least favorite watch because it felt like a big heavy unbalanced brick on my wrist.

-I felt it rounded out my three watch collection a little bit better. My other two watches are 18 karat yellow gold Daytona and I also have a 1977 Patek Nautilus jumbo two- tone, freshly Patek serviced with recent certificate of archive.

-I felt like my gold sub was gonna be trading at a slightly lower number soon once the new style gold sub was in the showcase. It seems like people wait their whole life for a stainless watch but every time somebody buys a gold watch they immediately put a replacement gold watch inside the showcase.

Anyway, it felt really odd trading a gold watch for a stainless watch on what amounted to almost an even trade.

Ultimately, if you are good with it that’s all that matters. Seems like not the best bargain, but that is your call alone. Enjoy your LV, it’s a cool piece.

Would of waited for prices to settle, maybe they will maybe they won’t. I have to say from my personal view it’s a crazy trade. But I can’t see a hulk sustaining the value it’s currently being listed at. But it’s a watch that’s now discontinued and you have your hands on one so if it feels like the right watch for you then you’re happy :)

If you are happy that is what counts, but I would not trade 18K gold for Stainless Steel

Exactly, that’s what felt so weird about it. What finally pushed me in the direction of doing the deal is that I have a 2019 gold Daytona. The gold Daytona is probably my favorite watch. The Daytona feels extremely balanced on the wrist. A submariner with a super case in precious metal is an extremely unbalanced watch. I was wearing it less and less and less. I kind of need a stainless watch right now that says successful but not too successful. It’s sometimes a little offputting to be wearing a yellow gold watch in certain business situations. Wearing a rare, vintage Nautilus isn’t always a good solution either. With the cash back I received the deal was fair considering the market. It just seemed very odd to me trading gold for stainless.

I think with the new style card you have something fairly rare

Can you elaborate more on this? The card is dated 6/30/20, no name of course. I am not super knowledgeable about this topic I just know that the new cards no longer show a name.

I think what he means is since the new cards just came out recently, like right around June 2020, I think, and now the watch was discontinued in August, that means only 3 months worth of Hulks have this new warranty card.

Who knows if that is worth much more but in The Rolex world it could be worth a lot.

Certain type Warranty cards have never contributed much to the value of a Rolex. At most a ‘complete set’ with whatever warranty card it came with.

In my opinion it’s misleading to suggest the ‘new warranty card’ might add value to the watch.

As long as you are happy is all that matters really.

HOWEVER, you'll be kicking yourself in about 6-12 months the way GOLD prices are going to move.

From 2015 through about June 2019, prices were pretty much flat on gold, fluctuating between $1200 and $1350. Since last summer, prices have jumped about 56% in a little over a year to almost $2000, and forecasters expect that to continue to climb. I've even heard estimates gold will be at $3000 by next summer.

This. And ironically, I think the Hulks are staying right in the 20-23 range for newer ones for a LONG time. Not sure about higher than 23 but honestly, if you're happy thats all that matters!

I understand what you're saying but by this logic, anyone could easily hold off on the purchase of a gold model indefinitely waiting for the price to plateau a bit whether it's on the way up or on the way down.

Also, if gold moves that much, this watch deal won’t be my biggest problem in life. Lol.

You are asking if you have done something crazy. This suggests that you are not sure and you think you might have done something crazy. This in turn suggests that maybe you've just hit a "learning opportunity".

Or perhaps not. It's your life, your money, your watch, your decision. If you don't think it was crazy, it wasn't. If you think maybe it was, then maybe it was. It's none of my business. Although FWIW (nothing), I wouldn't have done it.

I'm keeping a lazy eye on the value of Hulks because if mine goes past a certain level I will ponder maybe adding some money and going full PM. The Hulk is a fantastic and unique watch. Call me crazy, but I'd rather own the material worth than the hype. Prices would need to be even more crazy to push me over the line, which I personally don't think will be sustainable. But who knows?
