Daytona SS vs WG
Hi Guy's and Girls,
I'm looking to purchase a brand new Daytona but I'm unsure which one to go for. Price doesn't come into it. To be honest I don't even know the pro's and con's of each watch... One thing I read was that WG scratches easily and that the re-sale is not so good. I don't plan to sale it ever!!! Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome. Purchase location must be in UK, I've been offered it for £13.5k (WG) SS £6.7k unless cheaper in another country. Thank you kindly for your help. Regards Umster |

I would personally go for the WG model, but ultimately you go for which ever one you think you like better when you look at it and feel it and touch it. Which dial do you like better, etc? I think 13.5 for a WG is a fair deal, I'm guessing pre-owned?

I would go for whatever dial you like the best, be it white, black, meteorite, slate. That should be able to lead you to your perfect watch.

IMHO its the dial choice that makes the watch and will make you happy, although the heft of a solid gold piece is a nice quality feel element to a watch, with regard wear a polished bracelet is a polished bracelet whatever the metal

I live in the colonies, so I can not answer wrt prices. I have a SS Daytona and a WG Daytona. If price is not a consideration, I personally like the weight of the WG better. Also there are more "special" dials available. The SS just does not feel heavy enough to me.

I've never compared A to B style, but I would suspect you would get a little more "color" out of the WG over the SS. In my experience, WG still gives somewhat of a warmer hue than that of SS.

I prefer the bezels on the WG vs the SS... movement wise, they are identical for each generation.
They both scratch, so that should not be a consideration if the price difference is acceptable.. SS: DaytonaBrushFullcopy.jpg WG: FaceSide2.jpg

I have pondered this question myself and my personal opinion is that no one can tell the difference between white gold and stainless steel. Only someone who knows Rolexes can assume a Daytona is white gold from the way the dial looks.
That being said, the only advantage of white gold is that you have more dial choices. In short, don't buy your watch based on the metal, buy it based on which dial you like better.

In the above WG:
No polished center links! The bezel looks softer as well. |

No idea. Production numbers are not released by Rolex. I would think it's probably white, black (w/red), and meteorite (although this one is the grail watch for many people).

Here's a link where you can see some of the different dial options on the WG daytona http://www.swissluxury.com/rolex-wat...d-bracelet.htm

In a recent picture on this forum of a WG Daytona, it looked "warmer" than the SS Daytona's I've seen.
But then, so many variations in photography, lighting and computer monitor could cause the same watch to look "warmer" in one picture than in another. That said, I would want to see them together and wear them together. If no visual difference presents itself, I would go with the WG just for the private satisfaction of knowing I had a gold watch that everyone else perceived as steel. Why would that give me private satisfaction? I don't know, but when I imagine it, it feels good. |

I think you should:
A. Buy the WG B. Send it to me, and C. Accept my SS as the correct choice. No no.. no need to thank me, just trying to help out a fellow TRFer.... |

The S/S Daytona was once described by WatchTime magazine as the "world's rarest wristwatch'' because of the long waiting list (at the time of the article in the year 2001, waiting time was about 5 years) and large premium it commands over its list price. So if collectibility is important to you, then go for the S/S model.
However, the WG version offers many beautiful dial variations, including a meteorite one that I find very attractive. Since you say price is no consequence and resale not an issue, I'd say go for a WG Daytona and pick a dial that appeals the most to your eye. |

It is warmer when you also see it in person. I had a chance to compare both in person given I'm lucky to own one (SS version). The shine is deeper in the white gold version and of course the weight feels great on my wrist. The shine of the SS version seem brighter and the surface is very very reflective....almost mirror like particularly in the center links of the bracelet. Both are beautiful. Say that you don't care what both version are made of, and someone tell you to pick one based on price and looks, you might just end up picking up the SS version since it looks very very good for the price when compared to the white gold version. IMHO That said, the SS version is one of the pricest of all stainless steel watch and its' price has been ridicule and questions by many. |

I realize I'm about to lose any and all claims to being a WIS with this anecdote....
I recently saw a man wearing a Daytona at a professional dinner function so I asked him about his watch. It was a WG Daytona, but, honestly, I couldn't tell. I thought it was SS. It wasn't a meteorite dial, but it had Arabic and not Roman numerals (or the little dial markers, as the classic SS Daytona has). I was actually a bit embarassed that I couldn't tell the difference. Perhaps if I saw a SS vs. WG side by side I would have been able to tell the difference. Presumably the average person on the street wouldn't know that there is even a WG Daytona model. |
