Am I overreacting?

Probably. I was lucky enough to get one of the new black Sub dates. The black sub date was going to be my next watch in my collection before I knew the new model was being released. So needless to say I cherish this watch and feel very fortunate to have it. I’ve owned it for about two weeks and have worn it maybe 6-7 times (outside of the home). I’ve never dropped it, bumped it, or done anything rough with it. Of course, since it’s my new item, I look at it and clean it with a microfiber cloth every night. I’m surprised to already be noticing some signs of wear on the watch. I’ll call these “micro scratches” because they aren’t noticeable unless I shine a light on the watch and look at the right angle. Mostly on the case flank and bracelet. Is this normal? Am I being the “overprotective/hypervigilant new parent”? If so, just reassure me and tell me to stop overreacting. This is not a complaint, just wondering if this is something one with more experience than myself would expect. Thanks

Am I overreacting?

Yes you are! That’s completely normal; don’t overthink about small swirls as they are inevitable if you use the watch for its intended use (on your wrist!!). Congrats on your new Sub, load some pictures to see it!

Short answer.
Yes you are overreacting.

Micro maring on polished surfaces is inevitable.
It's caused by any number of and all manner of things

Whatever you do, don't use a loupe on it. Just enjoy the watch.

I'm half thinking this is a joke, but in the event you're dead serious...yes it's normal. Any watch, any surface will show signs of wear of some sort over time.
Rolex has some super polished surfaces and very fine brushed surfaces, it will show wear such as scratches, swirls, scuffs and even dents....all perfectly normal.
If you want to keep it new you have two choices, leave it with the AD or in a safe for a dark box to enjoy.

Worry less wear more.

When I got my first 'good' watch, a Speedy Pro, I was obsessed with every tiny scratch and mark. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I hate it when anything gets worn or damaged.

The key is acceptance. I've accepted that something shiny on the end of my arm every day is bound to pick up the wear of daily life. I'm still aware of the watches on my arm, and careful not to bang them against door frames, tables etc but if I look down and see a new small scratch that I don't know the origin of, I just shrug and forget about it now.

Still hurts when I see the ding in the edge of the case of my Speedy from banging it on a door knob though...

If this is going to bother you, I’d say plan on having a ceramic-cased wat h as the next one. I can guarantee you won’t find any scratches. You got choices from Omega, Panerai, Zenith, etc. just don’t ever drop them in cement or asphalt

I bet you are also checking accuracy every night, too.
To make sure it's within +/- 2 spd.

Yes, it's perfectly normal for a few more days.
Then it gets old and you'll stop worrying about it and enjoy.

Rinse the watch in a bowl of water or under a faucet before you buff it, if not you are scratching the polished surfaces with dirt and particles that adhere to your watch during normal daily wear.

Yes! That microfiber cloth is rubbing in the dirt and causing those micro scratches. Just hand wash with water and air dry.

Am I overreacting?

I’m exactly the opposite.

You’ve bought one of the better watches money can buy (Rolex) so you should be able to knock it into stuff without having to worry it falls apart.

If you want to keep it in pristine condition you should put it in a box in the safe...

Only use microfiber cloth after you rinse the watch, if you wipe your watch without rinsing the small dusts and particles on your watch will make small hairline scratches, but nobody really cares, it get worse overtime and the scratches are actually beautiful

This post must be a wind up?

That microfibre cloth won’t be doing you any favours if there’s any debris on the watch case. I give mine a rinse under the tap once a week for cleaning !

First, congrats on the new watch. Second, yes you are being a little over the top. Take it easy man. It’s a watch that is meant to be worn. Not polished every night. Enjoy it.

Short answer.. yes your over reacting
Long answer.. yes your over reacting

Ironically it’s probably the polishing that’s putting swirl marks on it at this stage.

Just wear it and try enjoy it otherwise give your blood pressure a rest and buy a gshock

If you don’t want scratches, buy a ceramic from Omega and take a 40% hit immediately upon buying. But hey, it won’t scratch!

Its only a tool watch if you use it for diving, otherwise it is a luxury watch costing many thousands of the local currency.

Why people persist with the 'its a tool watch' theme beggars belief.

You have bought a beautiful watch, it will last the rest of your lifetime, it will get a few dings and dents, bumps and scratches during its life, don't worry about them they are part of life. Enjoy the new Submariner and wear in good health.

Congratulations on your new Sub date.
I wear my watches with reasonable care and like them to remain in really good condition.
Despite this, all of them develop small scratches and swirls, and I am happy to live with it and accept this an normal wear and tear.
Coming to terms with this will enable you to enjoy your new sub without needing to baby it.

Just out of curiosity, the plastic stickers have been removed, correct? I remember one threat where someone was really bent out of shape because his Rolex had a big scratch on it and it turned out it was in the plastic stickers he'd never removed. How about posting some photos and congratulations on a new Sub Date!!!!
