Do I get on a waitlist for an Explorer now or wait to see if they "upgrade" it.
Hi guys.
Bit of a first world problem here. My very modest but special to me collection consists of these watches: Casio Royale World Timer, Seiko white dial dress watch (my grandad's watch), my modified Seiko SKX and my lovely Black Ceramic Bezel Omega Seamaster. I have known for a long time the next big watch purchase for me will be an Explorer 214270. The dial sings to me, when I see it in a video or a pic on here, the dial looks perfect. I was in Watchfinder (window shopping) a while ago and amongst all of the GMT's, Subs, ceramic bezels and cyclops, was the perfect SS watch. The Explorer. I have a love of travelling and the sea so my taste in watches has taken a certain path. I am now in a bit of a dilemma though. I have been keeping an eye on ebay and Chrono24, the 214270 is going quite well in the secondary market. Only yesterday a new one sold for £5,650. That's an increase of £450 above retail. Now, while the used value of the watch is not a concern for me. I am starting to wonder if the rumour mill of Rolex releasing a new Explorer in 2021 (the line's 50th Anni) is starting to make sense. IF they increase the size to 41mm, which after their decision to do the same with the OP line, is quite possible. I feel this watch will no longer suit me. As I think it will be too big for my wrists and it might ruin the beauty of the dial. I think a lot of people are starting to get worried about the same issue, hence the price increases on the secondary market. Of course I would be interested in the longer power reserve but it's not that important to me. I wear different watches during the day and night so having the two day power reserve wouldn't really bother me. What would you do? Ideally, I wouldn't of bought my first Rolex for maybe another year but this is maybe forcing my hand. Would you wait and hope they don't drasitically change the model or take the plunge now? Thanks for listening. |

Take the plunge now would be my advice.

Jump on it when one comes available, it's a classic. Already wears large at 39, I would call it a perfect all-arounder.

Do you need it to be new? There are plenty if pre-loved pieces on the forums like this one or in the hands of grey resellers. I think you can find a pre-owned one under retail, that’s what I would recomend

One on the wrist is worth more than a watch that has not been released or updated. Go find your watch, pay a fair price and get on with the ownership experience. If they do upgrade it you own a discontinued watch and if they do then sit back and see if you like it and let the prices settle.

I would say getting it brand new is a must. As it's not going to be often I spend a large amount on a luxury item I really don't need. As I did when I bought my Seamaster, I really enjoy going into the AD's to purchase. It won't do our buying history any harm either as I am going to stay with the same AD.
I just checked on the classified on here. No 214270's until page 4 and the first one available was priced at £6000. I think you would be very lucky to get one in good condition for under retail now. Thanks |

You can get Explorer from AD quickly (~2-4 weeks) - just choose your AD (and SA) wisely. If you can't get it from AD now, you won't get updated model neither.
What I'm trying to say there's no point to wait for potentially updated model. Get it now |

If they upgrade that model, it won't be available for 2+years to the masses. Standard Rolex marketing. Why wait, you won't get one anyway unless you buy the AD store out of everything nobody wants.

Get it now. The simplicity of the explorer is what makes it unique and desirable. So there’s only so much Rolex can do to actually change it. If anything, they’re just going to slap the 3230 and maybe tweak the size a little. Other than that though, it’s not going to be a drastic change.

I've been on the list for this watch for 10 months now. Local ADs are a mix of friendly and unapologetic arrogant. Starting to consider buying from an online grey since no local greys have it. If your ADs are anything like here, just uy it from a grey and save the BS. |

My advise is to go now
Don't wait for any movement "update" as it may prove to be a retrograde step. Rolex may be entering a "Dark time" of their own making with these new movements |

I was just offered this gorgeous reference last week and couldn’t help but say yes, as it’s always been on my radar and its simplicity and proportions are perfect.
I recommend hunting one down and enjoying it mate. Here’s mine: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you want it, get it.
If you wait for the "upgrade" the new model may not appeal and the discontinued object of your desire will start piling on value. But if you think you might prefer the next model (which might not be along any time soon because with Rolex you never know) it might be that you don't want the 214270 enough to make the jump. Sound to me like you should have jumped already. But i can't tell you what you like enough to part with your money. Only you can. |

These are only getting harder to get, my AD thinks they are starting to run this model out.... Get it while you can, if you can.

Actually a pretty smart strategy.
If you are expecting an updated model next year go ahead and get on the list now. Expect you won't get the current one and next year when the new one is out call you AD and say I've been waiting for a year! It could work. |

Get it now, you can always get the new one later if you like it better. If you wait and it's announced in April it will be in ADs sometime in August/September and will be a really hot piece. I would think a years wait or maybe much more so if you wait in reality it very likely would be more than 2 years until you get it. And that's IF it's replaced/updated with a new model. Life is short, eat dessert first!

Not so sure about that as I got mine in September and it came with the new style warranty card so it must have been manufactured pretty recently.

Traditionally AD’s start the list again unfortunately if a revised model comes out.

I do not think people can get this watch or any not sitting in the case Rolex from an AD in a few weeks. Supply has been and will be very limited through the end of the year. There was upsurge when everything got back up but that was stock already made. The gaps of the closures are now effecting the numbers. Plus, these cannot be ordered, they just show up when they do at ADs.

I've been having the same thoughts recently as I'm also looking at buying an Explorer
For me I feel the the extra power reserve isn't worth holding out for, plus I have small wrists so can't run the risk of Rolex increasing the case size |

I went into the 4 closest AD, told them I own 2 watches and really want to add a time only piece and this watch was the one for me. I offered a deposit or even pay for the entire watch. Three of the ADs tried to sell my DJs, so maybe I pissed them off by not playing the game. |
