Lumes not Lasting very long

I just purchased a 40mm Yach-Master Platinum. It was bought new from an AD in 2012. has the engraved rehaut with scrambled SN. I have noticed that the lumes on the dial do not last that long. When the lumes charge however, it is extremely bright and crisp...they just don't last very long. Is this normal?

It's normal. It's just glow-in-the-dark paint with upscale marketing.

When your eyes are accustomed to the dark it is generally readable throughout the night but just barely by morning.

Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that these lumes last well into the night. Oh well...doesn't really affect me too much, was just curious. Thanks again.

SuperLuminova is photoluminescent paint and needs a photo (light) charge.

It degrades based on the "charge", and that can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 15 hours, although it is not linear: source Nemoto

It takes a few seconds of bright light to fully charge the pigment. It will glow brightly, even in direct light, but the charge is going to appear to last longer in the dark and with dark-adjusted eyesight.

Yes sounds normal. Rolex lume is known to be weak. My vision isn’t what it used to be but in a dark room I can still read the time on my wrist perfectly(I usually wear my watches to bed).

Rolex lume in my opinion has always been poor and is one of the few things that needs to be improved on their watches. I think the research behind their lume is that the lume will function for years to come lifespan wise however is not bright/long lasting generally in the short term sense.

I miss Tritium! Even if it requires new dial/hands every so many years.

If you want a watch that will glow brightly all night then you need to go with a current tritium brand (I've chosen Ball for this purpose and own three). All charged luminescence paints are subject to rapid decay regardless of color. Larger plots make it more easily visible when it fades.

Well like all lume glow depending on that persons eyes how lume was charged whether viewed in a very very dark environment all effects the glow. Plus on most Rolex watches the lume plots and hands surface area are quite small. The bigger the total lume surface area the greater the glow will seem. But lume glow would be far down the list of priorities with any watch I owned.

Yes to this; I sleep with my watch, a 16570, and the lume always seems very faint when I turn out the light, but if I wake up in the middle of the night and look at my wrist it's bright!

This is exactly what I am experiencing...the Lume when fully charged is great...but definitely not long lasting.
