Legitimacy of GPHG?

I get excited for some of the smaller independents who won but I don’t understand some winners like the black bay 58 or the super ocean 48mm. Nothing inherently wrong with these watches but I don’t see how they bring anything new or interesting to the table. Are these awards just a dog and pony show?

I wish they'd exclude watches by brands as boring as Breitling/Rolex too and focus more on bringing attention to independents.

With the 58, speaking from my personal perspective, not bringing anything new to the table was exactly the attraction.

But I’m with you on the “show”, I’m not sure the pedestrian should really be rewarded. From the outside some of the categories and therefore the awards too seem irrelevant.

The judges balance voting for watches that deserve it and voting to not upset established brands.

Yeah I thought that was strange too. I like Breitling, but how the hell does a 48mm Superocean beat that Ming in the dive category?

Agreed, Ming would have been my pick.
