DavidSW - Impersonator Email

Hey guys, just got a strange email from someone claiming to be DavidSW with some amazing watch deals. The email is from dsworlandofl@gmail.com. Similar to David's but it has the 'fl' added.

I have attached the email below. This is obviously not him. Be careful out there.

What’s wrong with gmail? I use gmail because it is really secure. I enrolled in the Google Advanced Protection Program to safe guard my email.

Nothing wrong with gmail for personal use or for lawn service on Craigslist or registering your Netflix acct. But Gmail is much easier to infiltrate and scam than one’s own private business domain email properly set up and securitized. That is why as you may have noticed most substantial companies, including private companies, use their own domain. Don’t see many multi million dollar businesses dealing with substantial financial transactions run off of Gmail

I believe PWC uses gmail as their email server. Not sure of the technical aspects of it as they still have their email as @pwc.com.

I’ll also say the obvious — DavidSW is amazing and a wonderful seller. I bought a beautiful PAM from him and certainly will be buying additional watches from him in the future.

Exactly. Maybe 10 years ago, or longer, but these email scams are getting old now. If anyone thinks Davidsw would not buy his brother in law's (assuming he has one?) unwanted watches at a good price they need their head checking! :)

Regardless, thanks OP. The more these jokers are brought to light the less people will fall for their BS

This is a standard boiler plate scam letter that I have gotten numerous times.

These fools are so lazy they cannot even be bothered to change the text.

David would never email anything like that. And the obvious, he’s definitely not selling that for that price. Idk why all these scammers have to have a story with their sale.. makes it less believable to me.

Spoofing email is a simple task and having your own domain name isn’t any more secure then having a gmail address. Having your own domain is done more for branding than security. One should always stop and think before replying / clicking. Be sure to check email headers.

What’s more important is who is hosting your email and how secure is their platform. Google is considered to be one of the most secure email hosting platforms available.

As for DavidSW and securing his email account, he should have MFA enabled and of course not share his password. For branding it would look much nicer if it was @davidsw.com

As to you not “seeing” multi million dollar businesses hosted via Google, there are plenty of companies hosting their email with Google. You don’t “see” it because they purchased a domain name from a registrar so it doesn’t say @gmail.com.

Lastly, I would disagree that hosting your own private server is more secure than hosting with say Microsoft unless you have the resources and skill to secure your own infrastructure.

Thanks for the IT learning! I’m just a watch collector and don’t know much about it other than gmail acct hacked 2 times while my company’s non-gmail hacked 0 times.
