116710LN - serial number?
Gents - I'm new to all this.
Strongly considering buying a beautiful 116710LN, having waited years to be in a position to do so. Nervious as hell about all the fakes out there. There appears to be a serial number shown on this one, and it's attractively priced...... I'd be grateful for any expert thoughts? Cheers! Adam. |

Adam - so glad this has a serial number, which means nothing in the world of fakes. If I were you (or me), I would buy from an amazing seller here on TRF. Sounds like This is a lifetime purchase — don’t risk it for a few grand. |

Thanks.
I meant more that i wondered if serial numbers could be researched by members of the public, not so much that I was amazed it actually had one! As you say, any faker can put that in there. But how can I trace provenance from a number? With a car, one can see the build sheet, service history electronically through the main dealer network, MOT history, any crashes etc... Seems like a business idea screaming out to be done for watches? |

I take it this piece has no paperwork with it. Rolex went to all random serial numbers in 2011 including the clasp date code which have no rhyme or reason. If there's a code to be cracked no one has done it, only Rolex knows and that's their secret. Without the warranty card or any paper work there's no way to know the exact year it was produced or sold unlike an older model which can be traced by its serial number. Proceed with caution..If it is indeed a legit piece, without any paperwork it will always be attractively priced so the money is relevant to having a full set.

Rolex does not release serial numbers or service histories so there is no way to build a database like you mention.
And if there was, then any faker can access the database to build fakes using genuine serials. It is alot easier to build fake a watch than a fake car so your comparisons to cars doesn't make sense. Anyways, if you are not comfortable in spotting counterfeit Rolex, I suggest you buy from a reputable seller. Also this is not a gentleman's club and we do have knowledgeable female members too. |

Thanks.
One of the great errorrs inexperienced younger people make, is not recognsiing their own shortcomings, and seeing them as weaknesses. I know what I know, and I know what I don't know, and I recognise this is a highly (possibly one of the most) risky liquid markets in the world. I recognise my shortcomings, and will have to think hard. The other obvious choice is to see, because I propose to collect in person, very nearby to me, whether vendor is happy to meet at a recognised AD and have them confirm authenticity there and then, but then maybe AD's don't assist the secondary market at-all!?? |

You can go to an AD- If you have the serial# post it. There are KNOWN fake serial numbers out there.

you’re heading down the wrong path. This is a pretty common watch. Just buy it from one of the boutiques or other trusted sellers here. |
