Temptation: act or wait?

This particular reference is not for everyone, and I get it, but curious to hear what you guys would do in a similar situation.

I mentioned to some folks that I was interested in a tourbillon and some birdies had this bought in. Was not expecting it. But I love it, truly stunning in person. The pictures don’t do it justice, even the video doesn’t (which I don’t know how to add).

I have obtained more watches this year than expected so to add now does make me feel a bit guilty. And passing now would put me in a position to obtain a different tourbillon/minute repeater (in a few years).

So: would you go for a dream watch now, already being very content with your collection, or be patient and get a bigger dream (“grail”) watch in a few years.

I would wait, assuming you would take a massive hit on that watch if you were to sell down the road. Turn to another brand if you need an immediate fix or just wait it out for the one you want!

I'm generally a fan of the Tambour line (likely a minority opinion as you mentioned), and have owned a couple over the years. There's no doubt that their La Fabrique du Temps watches are on another level. If you love it -- and I mean LOVE it -- and plan to keep it in the collection forever, do what makes you happy.

That said, the reality is that the market it very, very limited for these watches if you ever decided to sell it. Take the original LV277 chronograph as an example. A ~$17k watch with an upgraded Zenith El Primero movement and an alligator LV strap can be had for ~$3k these days, and that's after months and months of sitting.

Good luck with the decision.

Wait, the patience will be rewarded as you wait more and get the real grail

Thanks for your response and insight. The hard part is that I do love it but I love the other as well...easy to be polyamorous in the watch world :) This is $X and the other is $3.5X. I am aware the secondary market is nonexistent and wouldn’t plan to move it anyways (even if I could lol). So this one would be a keeper forever but then then after one FT, I don’t think I’d pursue another down the line.

The LFdT pieces are incredible. If you ever get a chance to tour their manufacture (once travel is back) it is a top notch experience. The 277 is a great watch, my wife just got a gem set, still hasn’t let me wear it out of the house yet lol.

If you bought a bunch of watches this year, then enjoy them for a while. It's usually worth it to save up a bit for what you really want.

I want to like this watch - the reverse view is simply exquisite.

Can I ask what else is in your collection? Are there any other brands that speak to you?

The voice of reason. Solid advice. But isn’t it disallowed here

Thanks!

The reverse view and video is phenomenal. Need to get a SOTC photo but i lean towards Rolex as my everyday/robust wear and LV as my haute line. Taste varies from in between from GShock to the above. Nothing else competing here for a spot, wasn’t really planning anything, this just kind of fell into my lap a bit so if I don’t go for it now there’s really no immediate alternative.

Easy answer... Get what YOU want. You know the pros and cons, yet at the end of the day if you're going to love it and wear it then buy. You only live once.

I think if my dream watch was available today, I would be inclined to go for it.

At some point further down the road you can go for the grail still.

The movement looks rather incredible.

Another great piece of advice. I typically follow this but was a bit torn on this one so thus i posed the question. Appreciate your input
The jury is still out as there are compelling pieces of advice from both sides.

Thank you for your input. This movement is spectacular, had I just seen photos this wouldn’t have caught my attention. But in person it is something else.

The problem is having too many dreams and this one is a relatively new one.

If your goal is to own a tourbillon then I’d wait and buy one from a proper watch manufacturer rather than a company more widely associated with manufacturing suitcases & handbags.

I would wait purely as you’ve bought watches this year. Enjoy your new ones and let the wait for grail watch build momentum over the next couple of years. That ‘wait’ will be so worth it.

Hard pass. This watch does not work for me for so many reasons. Not a fan of the brand for watches. Look to a watch company.

Visually striking but a tourbillon without a seconds hand? The level of accuracy would be a puzzle evermore...

Happy holiday to you as well.

FYI: i looked at Breguet tourbillions years ago and felt they had too little personality (read: were boring). The LV has more 'pizzaz' imho. Maybe you should focus on MB&F or ???

What is your “bigger dream watch”?

Personally, I’d pass on LV watch.

The apex of the V “acts” as the second hand. I can place my own initial in there if I’d like but the effect wouldn’t be the same.

Lol. My voice is reason is always more apparent when looking unbiased at someone else’s situation, it gets minimized sometimes when thinking about my own lol.

I love some Breguet references but haven’t really looked into them as much. MB&F definitely adds a huge element uniqueness to the complications. I’m in the very very very small minority that has a passion for (and certain level of involvement with) LV high watches so I stay in the arena a bit.

This is the other. Watching the minute repeater chime through the dial is sensory overload :). Gotta get my son through college (or at least pre-school!) so hence the lack of urgency :)
