daytona chrono function
is it ok to run a daytona chrono all the time if the watch is being worn 14 hrs or so a day?
i love to see a large second hand running round the face of the watch and as we all know thats for the chrono function and not the second hand the new watch gets delivered this week but the salesman in the AD said not to do it constantly because it makes the power reserve on the watch very weak cheers |

others may disagree but I feel like I would about a mechanical stop watch, you wouldn't leave it running 24/7 just for the heck of it, so don't run your Daytona 24/7

There are schools that argue both ways on this.... but yes, you will use more power when running all the functions at a time....you cannot get more work without using more power (no something for nothing, a basic physics principle)
the newer 4130 movement has almost a dozen more jewels that will support and provide bearing surfaces for the stopwatch function and so I would say that any extra wear encountered would be negligible, or at least easily countered at a typical service call. For earlier movements, the stopwatch function is not quite as robust as the main movement and may see more signs of wear if run 24/7. But in the end..........it's a watch...use it the way you want to and repair or properly maintain it when necessary and it will continue to last for generations....even running the stopwatch full time.

I had the same issue with mine, I really missed seeing that sweet-second hand traveling around the dial, like it did on my GMT. I find myself from time to time just starting the stopwatch so I can watch it go round and round... (Guess I'm easily amused). But, I am of the group that says you shouldn't let it run 24/7, I just think it's not really the way the watch was designed.
As Larry pointed out though, it's YOUR watch, wear and use it as it makes YOU happy! |

I do run the mechanism from time to time. Does it make any difference? Probably not but it makes me feel good that I'm letting it run....

i had not considered the extra wear to be honest and if i read larry's post right then i dont have to worry because of the jewels? i take it off on a night for bed so could stop the chrono then it is a brand new watch i may find after a few weeks i get into the habit of not wanting it on i just dont know but i do like to see a sweeping big second hand after 5 years i just wonder if the "damage" done (if any) would be worth it? and that is a question that would i expect be immpossible to answer as there are too many variables i wear my watch no matter what i am doing and it will be the only watch i wear 99.99% of the time so in 5 years its going to have had some use and will need a service i know there are people who will say "why didnt you keep your tt sub if you wanted a big second hand" and the simple answer is.. 1/ my grail is this watch 2/ they dont do a blue arab . . . .yet!! cheers guys and thanks for the info all help and comments are appreciated |

I run my chrono all day long due to work and stop it at night. Care to post pictures of your blue arab when you received it?

Don't have a Daytona but have a Breitling Chrono Avenger... I don't run the chrono all day only when needed.
I don't have anything against the chrono sec hand being stationary, heck that's what they were designed to be. If I want a big second hand running, I wear my SD or my Omega SMP or my Seiko Divers or my Debaufre GMT Ocean 1 Running the chrono 24/7 just lowers your PR capacity and like anything mechanical, just advances the wear and tear... that's what RSC are for.

I don't think on the newer Rolex movements you will see extra wear, the Chrono portion is pretty robust, fully jewled etc. If you wear the watch daily you aren't even concerned with power reserve.
The same can't be said of lesser movements, even the venerable 7750 chrono functions aren't meant to run all the time and aren't fully jeweled. There are some excellent writeups by watchmakers out there on their opinions of movements in pointing out some really good things and a couple bad, worth researching and should be plenty of them for the newish Rolex chrono.

Don't worry either way. Do you really think a Rolex would break down because you use a function of it? Nobody would turn off the date of a watch to save some wear and tear...
In the meantime, use your watch as it pleases you!!! |
