Watch compliment.
Not sure if the board does this or not...I'm a professional software sales guy and talk (and most times, like to talk) with people every day.
I'm a TT GMT2C owner, but was wearing my blue Breitling Chrono SuperOcean on this particular day. I noticed a beautiful Daytona on a guy in / around our group of folks. I leaned over and paid him a compliment on his watch...and asked him about how it came to find a home on his wrist...and he gave me a BS story out of the side of his mouth about how his wife found some guy on the street corner and picked it up for him. My question is....does anyone ask? Don't we like to tell our story? (I won mine in a sales competition and darn proud of it.) Even on bad day, dont you get a charge out of sharing your experience? Do you brush people off when they ask? I was just a little shocked....finished a nice round of golf, having a few beverages at the bar....just some guys standing around chatting. Thankful for forum for allowing me to vent. |

I asked about a guy's GMT IIc once and he blew me off big time. I guess most people just don't care. I don't bother asking anymore

I had a similar experience. I commented/complimented the guy sitting next to me on a plane about his TT Sub. He totally blew me off. I also don't mention it anymore when I see nice watches. I will have a conversation about watches if someone notices/compliments me on mine though.

Chris has it right. If someone is interested then you know you have a potential WIS with you.
When you bring it you have to think: 1) Because they have an expensive they must care about watches? or 2) They feel like engaging on a discussion with a stranger? I don't think there is anything wrong with starting up a conversation upon seeing a nice watch, but you have to be ready to deal with the fact some are uncomfortable or not interested in talking about it. Heck, if most were honest 99% of the time the answer would be something like "Yea, I had some extra money and everybody said Rolexes were the best, so I bought this one." Or maybe worse, my husband / wife / dad/ bought it for me. You aren't expecting a discussion on the merits of the movement I hope. |

I'm not one to generally start a conversation about somebodies watch...I know that most people just aren't as interested in them as I am.
But I would never BS somebody or blow them off if they complemented my on mine.. There are enough cantankerous old codgers in the world...I don't need to add to the lot.. ..................

A lot of jerks buy them just because, and have no real love or appreciation for them. You can usually tell when it's a true watch guy, as he will be checking out your wrist also.

I complimented a very scruffy guy on a nice SS daytona once, he was looking at watches in a local AD, turned out to be a vintage sub dealer.. We had an interesting chat.

My wife doesn't have keen Rolex eyes like most of us here. She complimented a guy once at a bar with "nice Sub". He quietly replied "it's an Invicta". She's more careful now...she'll ask me first!

I was stood on the touchline watching my son playing rugby and I complimented another Dad's Sub.
I was quite disappointed when he did want to chat about it about from saying that he had owned it for quite some time. The chap even walked away!!! PeterT |

I'm happy to share MY story about MY Rolex. Love it when people notice. I'm not the least bit put off by the question.

I don't ask anymore.
I use to love trying to spark conversation with people and their watches but learned very quickly that not everyone is like us. I find that Omega owner's are willing to chat about their watch and Rolex owner's don't. Maybe a lot of Rolex owner's in the general population, minus the WIS, are buying it for its namesake. That's the reason why I don't converse with them about watches. Some people don't like the attention and that a 5k watch is susceptible to attention but a 50k Patek is not. |

I'm relieved to know it's not just me. I complimented a lady in line in front of me at Walmart on her DJ. She completely blew me off. Even acted uncomforatable. I'm 99.9% sure it wasn't a replica so that's not the reason.
I guess some folks don't like you noticing their Rolex. Jeannie |

While on vacation I was talking to a guy at a restaurant and noticed his DJ - I extended a compliment andtilted my wrist - He said thanks and that was that - on the way home, the guy across from me was wearing the same DJ I have, but I didn't bother - wanted to, but on the few occasions I have - I was shot down - maybe I should continue and use it as a rejection learning event that I can apply when the ladies shot me down!

I have only had very good experiences approaching people about their timepieces.
I must be one of the lucky ones!

Perhaps the reason the "Rolex" owners who are approached about their watches and act in a disinterested fashion is because they know their watches are fake.
Just a thought!
