2020 Oyster Perpetuals?

Hi, TRFers, What's behind the excitement (and higher price) around the brightly-colored, recently introduced OP models? These novel colors are priced at nearly twice MSRP (and generally more than the popular blue). I wonder if this is a fad (momentary break from norm), or a start of new trend, etc. Your opinions appreciated (and my apologies if there are so much already on this topic).

I think the high prices won’t be maintained bit they will still demand an over RRP price. Perhaps Rolex will stop producing a certain color and or add an additional one which will have a big impact on the prices.

I was surprised to see this as well. When i first saw the color lineup i was a little unsure about it but welcomed the the variety of flavor to the OP line. However, each to their own and how they spend their money but i haven't seen one of these in the wild yet and cant imagine the need to spend over sticker on an OP with a colored dial.

I agree with Matty99365. Also like to mention I saw a recent CL add asking $14500CDN for a BNIB OP41 yellow ... retail is $6950CDN. I couldn't believe my eyes!

Well in general its internet hype which drives prices up with sellers touting new bright colour dials. But these dials are not new they were around in the late 1960 into the 1970s called stella dials back then not huge sellers.

Yep...like padi said - internet hype has certainly helped. These watches lend themselves perfectly to the instagram world we live in. The coloured dials may not be overly popular with your typical Rolex wearer (take that how you want), but they have certainly done the job of penetrating a wider market - such as with younger people, women, social media types etc.

My AD has said the colours have reinvigorated the OP line, and brought in a bunch of fresh faces. He also thinks Rolex may continue to introduce more funky colours within the OP line over time.

I am not a fan of all the colours, but I think they are good fun, and I commend Rolex for sprinkling a bit of colour in to the range.

Rolex could release a watch with no hands and it would probably sell over rrp!

It’s particularly crazy because previous OPs were very easy to find (over here in UK). I could walk into any AD and see them all, at least here in London.
I just can’t understand why anyone would pay £9k for a £4k watch

Do any of fellow TRFers have the new joyful color OP to share with photos here?

Rolex models (not just sports) are already hard to find on display except the Cellinis. Before the pandemic I was living in Lyon France and I see from time to time, Explorers, Airking, PM submariner, DJ (some earlier threads). Curious how it is now there with manufacturing shortages.

Here you go. This one has gotten majority of wrist time lately. I absolutely love it. But I also didn’t pay 2x MSRP

thanks much and ... it is always good not to overpay for any timepiece if you can reasonably help it. Could also be an excellent conversation piece once distancing is alleviated.

My personal view is that prices should stabilize over time. In the event rolex throws everybody a curveball and starts changing colors or they are a short production run perhaps that would change. I’d actually like to add the red dial. Most AD’s aren't getting a ton of requests so should be feasible. Just will depend on the supply.

In part, these colors are appealing to individuals that previously had no interest in Rolex.

For instance, a friend of mine called me a couple of weeks ago asking if I had seen the “colored Rolex’s” ? We discussed them for a few minutes, then she said “I gotta have the 41 turquoise” ! We made a trip to the AD, to find that several ladies in, or related to, the local watch club had requested the exact same. BTW, all wanted the 41, not the 36 !

Gray prices will stabilize in time .................. no one can define “time” though.

I think they would have made a killing selling the pink in 41 too.

I don’t think so. I think it will get ALOT worse. When the S&P is at record prices, when Buttcoin trades 40k, and rates neg, those with money will spend it.

Surprising. Demand is obviously outstripping supply by a considerable margin.

I don't think the Stellar dials ever looked much good but if Rolex can sell them, they should make them. While there will always be a fan base for these dials, the current situation strikes me as faddish. Time will tell.

For having tried a couple of OP41s on my wrist, I think it's bound to be a fad. Vivid colours can be fun as a one off, but I don't see them becoming a trend in the long run. I almost pulled the trigger on the yellow dial, but realistically I know I would have worn it only a few times in summer and probably never the rest of the year. Is it worth spending 6k on a watch that will stay in the box most of the time? Not to me.

Personally I am in love with the colors but haven't seen one in real life.
I also would not mind spending a little extra $$ for these...

Below is a few of the stella dials that were available in DD,DJ and in certain countries OP, way back in the late 1960s into 1970s.
