Is it the color Green? Or just being different.

Looking at on-line selling locations, I notice that the LV version of the sub, the Green Bezel, is substantially more then the (standard) LN or black bezel. Hey, if this is your choice more power to you and enjoy your sub But can you tell me; what is the reason that makes this watch so coveted (and more expensive). Is it actually the color green, or is it just having something non-standard or different then the “regular” black bezel? If there were a another color, say Red for the heck of it, would it also be as coveted and higher priced?

You've been here long enough its pure hype.

Dont you remember when the Hulk was selling way way below MSRP and you couldnt move the damn things even if you tried.

Recent hype in green has caused it to skyrocket. But green is a color that wont last its a in fashion color one day and out of fashion another day. Its not like Black or Blue.

I think there’s 2 main camps Paul

People who love green and people who want something different.

Me personally love the color green and I think Rolex does it well

Hi Paul. Some like the color green, some like Rolex sunburst dials and/or some like that a green Sub is different from the standard LN.

Others prefer the black Sub.

It’s just a watch. It’s good to have choices.

Yet, when it sold below MSRP, it’s important to remember that LN Subs sold for even less from MSRP. LV Subs have always sold for more. Lately, the delta has grown. Not that any of that matters, IMHO. What matters is what one wants to wear.

Originally, I think the drive/hype was simply a pure numbers thing.
As in, speculation was that there were far less LV production numbers as compared to the LN. Now I don't know Rolex factory inventory numbers, but perhaps that was true..?! Maybe not...
From there it seemed it was THE watch to own. Sought of like the SeaDweller. Those were also a somewhat a 'rare' beast to it's cousin, the Submariner.

Anyway, take from it what you will, but the SS Rolex prices are off the charts. It now seems modern pieces are fetching vintage numbers.

Green Is Good! Is the short answer. However, it's a great color to add to a collection as it goes really good with most wardrobes. I don't have a Green watch yet but think eventually I'll put some in my collection.

Seems like the LV is way harder to come by from AD. I had originally asked for LV but settled for LN when I got the call. But I cant complain maybe one day I will get a lv.

From talking to my AD ( which probably means nothing) he said that they get 1 green for every 4 black Subs , so I guess in that case it makes it a lot rarer than a black Sub

I would guess yes.

I've never liked thick black bezels. It's a personal thing. I particularly like green, blue and red, although not vivid shades.

Green seems to be getting more common in watch ranges, so perhaps it is a trend at the moment. If so, I will be temporarily trendy. It won't last. Blue seems to have been a main stay for years.

This is a pretty long fashion fad then. What is it now.... 4 years, 5? No sign of slowing down?
Saying green "won't last" as its all hype is like saying "current prices will crash". Yeah it might happen one day in the distant future but so will a lot of things - like petrol cars will cease to exist or nobody will wear jeans any more. Green on watches has been attractive for a long time and there are no signs of that changing at any time soon. Why? Nobody knows. Cultural trend.

Bell bottom jeans and pants lasted for about 10 years as a fashion trend. Now you wont see a single person wearing them. You cant even give them away for free and if you do they become spare cloth to wipe your car down with.

Trends can be short or quite long. Green has never been a color now or traditionally to last any fashion trend or phase. It eventually becomes a color ppl fall out of love from.

Loved my Madchester flares in 88/89. Regularly soaked up the Hacienda floor juices in those bad boys!
Agree though - trends come and go, some last months (loom bands) and some last years (denim, beards).
Nobody knows how long either the Rolex frenzy will last or the green love. They're both getting on for half a decade already though.
Interesting points.

I just picked up my new kermit this past weekend:

green is my favorite color
IMO its just as versatile as black or blue
The sub is one of my favorite watches, however it is a pretty plain /standard looking watch. The green ceramic bezel gives it just a little bit of pop with out being loud
I do enjoy the exclusivity of it
Im hoping in the future it will appreciate in value more than the standard sub

this is all just my opinion and I can see how other would not like it for all the same reasons i listed. . For me it was a must have

I have a very good long standing relationship with my AD and trust very much what he tells me. He told me that mine most likely will be the last kermit they get for the year.

Green is a rich, beautiful color.

If the bezel were red, purple, pink, yellow, or orange, I'd avoid the watch like the plague.

The original green sub was the watch that pulled me in from being a one watch guy. Therefore, I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for the color.

Which might explain why I have a couple in my collection.

IMO it is a nice watch that adds variety to a large collection. Personally I prefer the classic black.

Nice to hear perspectives outside of WIS and forums as I’d venture to say the vast majority would not be as interested in a “green” watch as the watch enthusiasts are.

My relative get an original kermit the first year they came out. I'm not a fan of that shade of green. Value wise it has skyrocketed.

I love the hulk. That bright green stands out and the sunburst dial style reminds of the beauty of the bluesy dial. The hulk and bluesy will be iconic dials or the years. Not sure that they wil? be the most valuable but they sure are pretty. I'd like to see rolex come out with an 18kt yg sub with hulk dial. That would be sweet.

Rolex seems to inject green into "special" models such as anniversary modela. The box is always green. Rolex seems to heavily associate the color green with reason for celebration. There is some cultural phenomenon of celebrating milestones with a Rolex.

This - and the fact that the colour green usually has symbolic meaning for Chinese and Middle Eastern markets, particularly as popularity has now grown also.
