Why is GMT II Pepsi so much more than Batgirl on the secondary market?
Price delta seems to be about 4-5k. Any thoughts?

Hype. Same reason why the white Daytona is more $$ than the black. They all are the same exact watch so you must buy the color combination that best suits your personal style.

Actually I think it's lower supply. The Batgirl has taken the place of the discontinued Black Black Black GMT. It's like the black Sub in the Divers range, Rolex strategy is to have high supply references and one low supply reference in each model. Also the Batman BLNR was produced for six years and a lot of people who like the blue and black already have it. The ceramic Pepsi is a new model which was only introduced in 2018 so only 3 years in production or to be more accurate only 2 years because of Covid.

Perhaps it's because the Batgirl only exists in the immature minds of 3-4 years olds, like the rest of these silly stupid names for Rolex watches.

Sure if we’re talking about MSRP being different, they’re not. Quick browse of online preowned retailers show there are similar numbers of both BLNR and BLRO variants. The market value is different. Simple answer is people are willing to pay more for the BLRO on the preowned market. |

Everyone who has replied is correct
I have the watch and love it - but, I still will buy a BLRO immediately whenever the opportunity comes by my way.. my ad says should be sometime this year .. but anyway, my best answer is the availability and hype together (: ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I actually asked an SA this exact question a few days ago, and he said that his AD sees about equal number of BLRO/BLNR each year — no discernible difference. He chalked it up to a combination of (1) history, (2) BLNR existing on oyster before BLRO dropped (so more out in the marketplace) and (3) a more unique color combo.

because it's more popular........and seen as a collectible piece, as part of the soda family released previously by Rolex(Pepsi/Coke/Root beer) back in the days

Purely speculation, but I believe it’s 2 main reasons: History and more “fun” color combo. The fact that the original 1954 GMT was a blue & red bezel makes a difference. The Batman/Batgirl hasn’t been around very long time at all, in comparison. And the same way that a Hulk/Kermit is in more demand than a standard black sub, the red & blue gives one extra non-black “color” on the bezel.

Not sure about supply but demand is certainly higher. There is a hype element but also the reason behind the demand is history and better color palette. The Batman does not speak to me because of the bright blue. I have been offered and turned down a BLNR and still waiting for a BLRO.

The Pepsi is much more iconic and therefore sought after model.

History and honestly I’m assuming people prefer the colors. Oddly, I like blue and black, but the BLNR never did it for me. Passed on it twice from AD, one being years ago at a discount.
Jumped at the chance for the Pepsi. Just one person’s opinion. |

BLRO is my daily and thus far favorite watch I've ever owned (until my blue 4500V arrives and knocks it down a peg).
There's just something special about it. It's a clear case of synergy to me. I felt the same way about the Ernie Ball musicman basses 20 years ago. You can list what it is and what it has and compare it up and down but all together it takes on something bigger.

I was very lucky to have both from the boutique. Both of them are equally gorgeous, if I were the Grey buyer, I would rather buy the cheaper one.

The only so called nicknames are acceptable regarding Rolex watches to myself after learning about and wearing the brand Rolex for over 50 years is the ones most used decades ago like pepsi and coke for the inserts. All of today's nicknames IMHO are very childlike, for what was once was a prestigious brand of watches. As today Rolex watches now are little more than $$$£££ object things, and silly nicknames to many.

Its like art very minor differences can make huge huge differences in price. I just paid close to $19k for the BLRO but wasn't even interested in the Batgirl. I love the color combo and history.

There was a lot of push back to the nicknames and most of the hardcore keepers of the crown left the forum because of it. There was more professional talent and inside watchmaking skill that left than this forum would ever see again. |
