Effect of hand sanitizer on Rolex
With the frequent use of hand sanitazer which is high alcohol concentration in current pandemic situation, I am wondering if it will affect a watch esp. Rolex vintage model like corroding the bezel insert and seeping through the rubber gaskets since that alochol molecule is smaller than water?
Should we exercise more caution when using hand sanitizer to avoid contact with the watch? Sent from my SM-A515F using Tapatalk |

Rest easy, the alcohol molecule is much larger than H2O.

I suppose the stuff could collect dust and whatnot, if not rinsed well.

It may be larger, but also could have more corrosive properties and in time affect the integrity of gaskets.
I mean really, this should be too much of an issue. when using sanitiser make sure you sanitise your hands and not your watch |

Studies have indicated that a Rolex, if bought into contact with hand sanitizer will disintegrate over time.
This leaves the wearer with the inability to obsess over boxes, investment valuation, mean AD’s that won’t kiss their ass when entering a showroom and the million other phobias displayed on what used to be a forum about watches. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I use a cotton stick damped in alcohol every now and then to clean clasps, in between bracelet links and cases of my SS watches. None has disintegrated or dissolved thus far...

Rolexes were designed and meant to be tool watches. Robust and durable tool watches. That was the case for million watches produced for decades and are still alive and kicking non stop. People were leaving with them and did pushed them to the limits and the watches always delivered.
Current rolex watches are far superior technologically than their predecessors decades ago. And people are wondering all these things! What next? Should we avoid Rolexes in raining days? Sent from my M2007J17G using Tapatalk |

Sounds like you should be very concerned about putting hand sanitizer on your skin.

While I certainly understand the cause for concern as it relates to alcohol being more corrosive ... I think we need to discuss the manner in which you apply hand sanitizer that would cause it to get close to your watch.

When I picked up my watch last month at the AD they had an official Rolex disinfectant for trying on, sizing, etc. I thought it was pretty funny and the SA told me they were instructed to use this spray exclusively by Rolex. It even had a reference number E40025!

Hand sanitizer contains either ethanol, (C2H5OH), or isopropanol, (C3H8O). Water is a simpler compound, (H2O), and is thus a smaller molecule than either.

I’m more concerned what alcohol is doing to my liver.

First question, how much hand sanitizer are you using?! My watch rarely comes in contact when sanitizing. Outside of that, i would imagine salt water is much more corrosive.

To add some relevant content to this thread. Leather straps are more of a concern with extensive use of alcohol based sanitizers. To our few Rolex models with leather straps and our Paneristi's this could be something to think about if you continuously go nuts with the hand sanitizers.

Don't put hand sanitizer on your wrist, it will shrink your wrist and your Rolex will fall off....

People are are not helpful.
So what happens when you put these solutions on your Rolex, basically due to elemental chemistry, reaction will occur. Most of the time your Rolex might exhibit syndroms such as coordination issues, memory loss and oftentimes unbashful behavior. Just leave it alone for a while and then it should go back to normal. Might have a headache the day after though. |

I can imagine a pedantic and purple-prosed Jack Forster article emerging out of this question.
