Single watch collection vs Large collection

is it better to have a one or two expensive watch collection or an 8 watch middle of the road cost collection? what I mean is it better to have 2 watches valued at $50,000 each or 8 pieces totaling $100,000??? i'm so torn about this question...

I used to be a 1 watch guy but started to realize that my 1601 would benefit from me having a rotation.

If it were me. I would say keep 2 classic watches (One daily and one dress) Then spend the money on other hobbies. Wine, cars, vacations etc.

I'll take 8 "shitty" SS models vs 2 PM pieces please! For me, less is not more when it comes to watches. I like a little variety.

For myself, I prefer to have multiple pieces to enjoy for different occasions, or to associate with milestones.

Somewhere in between. For me I think 3-4, maybe 5, is the sweet spot. Currently have 7 and it gives me a headache trying to decide which to wear never mind which to sell to trim down!

I would (and do) have 4 to 6. Assuming $100k total budget I’d suggest the following split:

1) $35-45k
2) $15-20k
3) $15-20k
4) $8-10k
5) $3-5k

I tailor my watch acquisition to specific purposes (daily, dress/formal, casual) and if the watch speaks to me. I also look at complications, and as such I have 2 PM, and 2 SS. I don't feel like I'm spending too much time deciding which watch to wear on a given day/occasion. But for some people, that's the fun of this hobby.
Budgets are very individualized as well.
If you like how a 10k, 30k, or 60k watch looks on your wrist, I wouldn't get/not get it, just because of the price, unless you are strictly budget constricted.

Initially you think I'll get my grail and be happy... lol then you get said grail and you want a different grail. In the mean time you pick up a few fun pieces.. next thing you know you have 5-6 watches lol Its a great process. This is amplified if you have a good AD who calls you when they get "interesting" pieces.

Best collection is a mix of SS and PM in dress and sports models from various tier manufacturers

I'd want at least 2, but I think 2 beats 8. You generally want something to wear while the other watch is in service, and it's nice to change it up once in a while.

I personally think 3 is the absolute sweet spot.

I'm somewhat on the multi-piece side. I wear a 126610LN the majority of the week, a Bell and Ross 03-92 black ceramic on the weekends at the lake, and 116509 blue dial for nicer occassions and am waiting on a 126719BLRO for similar use as my WG Daytona. Variety, but not a crazy number of watches...(4)

Multi piece collection for me. I love changing watches according to mood, dress or occasion. I had one Rolex(1680) for 26 yrs but frequently wished I had more but now I have 19 and all get worn regularly. Some get stressed when having more because of maybe not using one or two of them in favor of other references but to me that means they likely do not like the other pieces as much. I like what I have but at one point I will consolidate my collection but I can seeing staying at 10-12. Variety is the spice of life.

4 to 6 pieces is ideal, each serving some purpose or adding something of substance to the collection... different dial colors, different functions, different bracelets or strap combos, and maybe some variety in category (dress, sport, everyday, beater).

I was more satisfied as a one-watch owner. But once I started accumulating, there is no turning back. I mean, look at my list. I can't let any of them go.

Lifestyle (how active) and where you live plays a part (safety).

I would take the 8 watches (although with 1 PM Rolex, the rest made up of a couple more Rolex and other brands).

I would prefer 2 or three 3 nicer watches than 8. Less is nice. But, 3 is optimal to me so I would buy the best 3 I can afford and like within the budget.
