16570 Polar overpriced

All the talk about new releases on here, but hear me out.

I like the proportions of the 40mm a lot more than the 42 and the older style GMT hand. I feel like it’s a good looking watch and I have been back and forth on it. I would have purchased at MSRP when new.

I understand market pricing and it being discontinued etc. But I just don’t see it as being a 7-9K watch.

What are your thought on this?

Kinda the same as a 16610 sub. It's just the going rate nowadays.

But I’m sure you see a green dial Submariner as a 20k watch

It’s rate of price climb over original MSRP is commensurate with other 5-digit models. For a while it lagged the others - but continued organic demand, compounded by amp’d prices in general, make for today’s asking price.

If you’re seeking a bargain on one, then look for orphans that have no pedigree, led a rough life, and are sold as watch alone on a NATO. It’s still the legendary watch you want. Then you can go about seeking a bracelet after the hype dies down. Find one that needs rehab and get it to Rolliworks, send the head to RSC and you’d be a happy owner methinks.

The barrier to entry into the Rolex brand has just been raised.

Honestly if you were to physically hold and compare a 6 digit to a 5 digit Rolex, the quality difference is world’s apart, especially on the bracelet

You could say that about any Rolex SS 5-digit reference, right? Sounds like your frustrated that you didn’t pull the trigger a couple years age... I feel the same about 15400s when they were easily found for $12-13k.

Get back in the time machine and buy it at MSRP, or deal with with current market price. This is a common theme of almost every thread now.

I hear you, OP. Personally still used to 16570 selling in the 4.5-5k but market value these days tells a different story. It's a beautiful, iconic reference (glad I got mine when I did) but I can't see myself paying 8-9k for one.

The 40mm proportion is just right imo. Now the news is out with Rolex sticking to 42mm case, folks who are hoping to get the 40mm will be limited to the 5 digit one. Henceforth price will only go up from here.

I agree so I wait possibly never getting to the perceived value I feel is fair. Its great having patience and not caring about instant gratification.

You’re right. It’s not a 7-9k watch. It’s a 5-7k watch.

I paid $6800 from C&C for a 16550 with no box or papers - had a beautiful patina but the bezel was in bad shape - got an original bezel from eBay and it looks fantastic -

no desire to sell it so I didn't care about B&P

You guys are ignoring history.

All of the old generation Explore II models command sky high prices, the 16570 is not likely to be different.

16570 is always the right size with 40mm. Its a beautiful classic watch. Now Grey markets prices for preowned are madness. I believe 16570 price will continue to rise ..sigh!

Can anyone see the 16570 reaching 1655 prices further down the line?
The 16550 isn’t ‘too’ far behind.

It would be easier for me to accept the 5-7K range. Only because I do think it looks great and is a let’s call it “classic” I guess the search continues...

Prices skyrocketing doesn't mean you have to buy it.

I agree, I’m still surprised at the price jump in the 5-digit models but it’s obviously due to the 6 digits being virtually unobtainable. But I agree 8-9K for a 5-digit that’s 20 plus years old is hard to dish over

It's worth what people will pay for it. I don't get why they didn't go back to the 40mm Exp II when they went back to the 36mm Exp. As was said here, prices on the 16570 should continue to rise as it is the only 40mm Exp II option. Glad I got one in decent shape a year ago for $5,300, at the time some here were saying that was a dumb idea since with the China Flu recession Rolex prices were sure to drop.

Either that or some prefer the 5 digit models.

This is exactly it. If cases were full of 6 digits you would be buying 5 digits all day long for $5K. Period. Overpriced supply and demand issue

I disagree, for some the five digit is preferable. I wouldn't buy a six digit if it was sitting at an AD for MSRP.

Exactly my thoughts and it’s why I recently pulled the trigger on a W series white dial with nice natural even patina across the plots and hands. I haven’t seen too many nice ones with matching patina on plots and hands. Most look like they were baked with orange plots and bright white hands.
Love the look, paid 8.5K. Think that was cheap for what I got.

I bought mine 5 years ago and so glad I did. It felt like a bargain at the time. Probably wouldn’t pay the market rate now days though....it’s still a great watch and I enjoy wearing it regularly.
