From a Graphic Designer...

I noticed on the new Explorer, Rolex changed the position of "Explorer" from the lower portion of the dial back to upper portion. From a graphic design stand point I think it make the dial look off balance, top heavy and crowded. And it's not in sync with most of the sports line (e.g. GMT II, Submariner, Yacht-Master...etc). Also it obstructs the word "Explorer" at the most perfect time...10:10:31!

I will be holding on to my 214270 Mk2. What do you guys and gals think?

I like the "Explorer" on the top for the 36mm and bottom for the 39mm. 39 has a bigger gap so it balances, but 36 with 2 line at the bottom looks better.

Apart from my own tastes, I know nothing about graphic design. I would say the previous version on the right looks better and more balanced.

Explorer at the top is how it was done originally so is historically correct, but I agree the dial looks much better balanced with it on the bottom. Just another reason I absolutely love my 214270 Mk2.

I like it on the top, same as on my 114270.

I wish they did away with the Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified on all their watches

I agree it feels top-heavy and crowded although in practice I barely notice the type on my watch dial.

They should have made "Explorer" and the tip of the second hand red, so the grey dealers could get $26,000 for them!

I agree. I prefer the Explorer logo on the prior bottom

Agreed. The new watch looks askew, don’t like it.

As another graphic designer, I couldn’t agree more. The 214270 MkII is flawless

I’m sure they have some excellent graphic designers in Switzerland. I mean Rolex Magazine is beautifully done, the design work in it is immaculate. I wish Rolex would go with a less is more approach. The 2-liner Sub dial is sublime!

Explorer 36 and lower always had name on the top and when they made 39mm version (both MK1 & MK2) they moved it to bottom. Now they made again 36mm and moved at the top to differentiate between models.

I agree bottom is perfect and more balanced. I mentioned earlier that new Explorer II text (with 42mm dial) should have been moved to bottom as well - firstly its better and then differentiate from previous version of Explorer II.

I agree too, plus I notice the font is smaller and thicker, which crowds it more.
The crown and the word ROLEX look off or too small to me as well.
I saw a new GMT Master II and it too had what looked like a small ROLEX font.
Though as csaltphoto said not notable in real life, especially with no glasses.

Agreed, glad I have a 214270. Not interested in a 36mm watch personally. The vertical spacing in those upper three lines irks me as well. Very crowded.

Another graphic designer, and I also like the balance better with the Explorer text on the bottom. But from a historical standpoint I like it better on top though, so I have internal strife.

Am in graphics myself, and would agree the weighting and balance is pretty poor.
The ‘Explorer’ shld be down the bottom.
And the ‘Oyster Perpetual’ I think is a bit too close to Rolex.

I think l poor graphic design and poor font choices are rife in the watch business.

I concur...I think the dial should just have the crown and Rolex on top. And just Explorer on the bottom of the dial...maybe in orange like the Explorer II. To add a slash of color. I’m going to do a mock-up!

39 mm looks more balanced with it on bottom

I’ve never seen the need for having ‘oyster perpetual’ on the dial

It’s in line with : the Datejust, the Day Date, the Milgauss, the Explorer II.
And it’s back to its original position. It all makes sense.
