I had to blink more than twice ...

but I just saw a local post on Craigslist (I live near Vancouver, Canada), for a new, unworn, OP41, coral red, complete set, asking a firm $16k CAD. MSRP is $6950 CAD. That's 130% above retail!!! Am I the only one who thinks that's crazy?!

That’s the name of the game with Rolex these days. Which is quite sad considering it’s their entry level watch…. I think value retention is a great thing for watches. But wait list and absurd premium for an entry level watch kinda takes the fun away.

Thats what happens when they launch a "new line" with not many getting rolled out. Even my fiancé who isn't into watches has seen and wants an OP36 in the tiff blue. My SA has told me they haven't even seen a tiff blue 36 come in yet. They've seen it in 41 once and a 36/41 in the green.

I think Rolex grossly underestimated the demand the colors would bring in.

This is what is crazy to me. Even if the popularity was grossly underestimated, this is the entry level Rolex, how are ADs getting so few of these models? I don't usually go for the theory that Rolex is producing less than they did prior to the shortage issues, but it is hard not to give it some weight when you hear these types of numbers from ADs.

Flippers be flippin’. I’m sure the Craigslist listing has been emailed to the managers of all the local Vancouver ADs. The flipper will never get another Rolex again. Hope he scores big (this one time).

I’m sure it hasn’t. I doubt most AD’s care even a little bit about what you do with the watch once you buy it. Unless the AD is jealous of course.

Got my wife the green 31. Waiting for a yellow 41 for myself. They’re definitely interesting watches. Demand is there.

$16k CAD = $12.9k USD.... that's a bargain! You should buy it now!

Trusted seller here in the US is selling unworn for $14375 USD = $17.8k CAD

although there's a discount - I wouldn't trust Craigslist with a $1. So there's a risk premium in buyer from trusted seller

You know, I can post an OP41 for sale right now. Perhaps for $15k CAD.
It's a ridiculous price. Is Craigslist gonna stop me? Nope.
Also, I don't own that watch right now. Is the site gonna do something about it? Nope.

Take these ads with a grain of salt.

It's insane. There's a seller here on TRF right now trying to get $14,950 for a Tiffany Blue OP36. That's ridiculous. Whoever buys that needs their head examined. I got my wife the OP34 in blue on Saturday and my SA said she could have ordered any color from the catalog if she wanted to. There would just be a wait for some of the other colors, but certainly any of them could have been ordered. We didn't do it so I don't know what that process would have looked like, such as putting down a deposit or whatever. That was for the 34. I didn't ask about the 36 since I already own one.

Spot on!

There's no polite way to put it.

And no, that is NOT the "market price" for this model...

This sort of thing has become the norm. Folks should buy the watches they want and stop buying to resell.

I know my AD has sold at least one 36 and one 41 in turquoise. He said he tired both on, so makes sense they’ve sold one or two. So they’re out there just have to find them.

If justified I can put down 50k on a crazy piece like a perpetual calendar with a PM case and never buy another one after the fact .. but 50k for a steel watch with a simple chronograph most people don't know how to use I just can't understand the logic and they are not even keeping these watches !! its just bouncing from flipper to flipper with a slight price increase every time

Yes, I saw that listing as well. Crazy asks for Daytonas don't shock me, but the OP did. 130% over retail for Rolex's entry level timepiece?! And I really do think it'll sell for close to that.

its free market. Sellers can list what ever price they wanted. try to look on eBay for hot sports cards.

You have to understand that some people just cannot get Rolexes from an authorised dealer. No matter how much money you have. If you have the means and want the watch and don’t want to ridiculously wait for years then this is your option. I’ve paid huge amounts over retail for some watches and I couldn’t care less.

An example of my own is gmt meteorite, I paid roughly 50 per cent over retail for it brand new, because I was never going to be able to get one another way, the best I could hope for is a “maybe” sometime in the next few years. Now if I want to sell and decide I need the money for something else for any reason I’m quite confident I could sell it immediately tomorrow for a £5k loss. Not a big deal considering how much we pay for these watches anyway and I get to wear and buy it immediately.

Anyone can "ask" anything; you'd have to be crazy to pay it though. Waiting on my OP41 Green from AD since Sept. Wife received her OP31 Candy Pink and loves it.

Simple economics at play here... supply and demand.

I'd love to know the prices actually achieved vs that advertised, to show if it's a false economy or not.

They sell for what they’re listed for - at the bottom end of the listings. Try get a discount you’ll be very lucky maybe 500 off I’ve bought many watches and they definitely sell very quickly.
