Icon4 New Milgauss How Rare, worth the sacrifice?

Hello, I am new here ! First and foremost, HELLO !
I would like to find the expert opinion of all you afficionados on the New Milgauss. I have read before that is very rare and that the newest incarnation of the rare classic with the green saphire version, is ultra rare, so much that you should snatch it up, if you see one, as there is like a year of two waiting period to order one.

Is this too much hype and emotion??
Another thing...with the present financial crises, wouldn't there be a glut with even the coveted Milgauss as Rolex has recently shown a 40% plunge in profits. I live in Switzerland and can tell you this is Rolex's present predicament.

Today: as I walked past a watch store, I saw a green Milgauss for 6,900 swiss francs ($ 6,154.23).

It is worth the sacrifice to get it ? Sorry if I sound naive and thanks for your thoughtful advice !

Best wishes, Swisslivingame

Hi Swisslivinggame and welcome from a near newbie-

One thing I did not read in your post was how much you love the GV and how just seeing it puts a smile on your face. I believe that is a very important factor and one that none of us here can begin to determine.

You read that it is very rare and "the newest incarnation of the rare classic." Maybe, but no one really knows. Are they hard to get in the current marketplace? Yes. Does that it any way guarantee that they will remain hard to get or are destined to become a "classic"? NO!

Supply could catch up with demand very quickly. Rolex could make 50,000 of them in the next year if they desire. We do not know and have no way to find out.

If you love the watch and want it on your wrist right now then it is worth the money. If you are more interested in speculation on the future desirability of the GV, then I think you are making an expensive guess.

Short supply or not, I think over $6,100 U.S. is a high price for that watch, but I am not in love with that particular model. My head says for $6,000 there are a number of other Rolex choices that would move me.

As always, it is your call based on your personal taste and on your wallet.

Mark

You've already answered your own question by your tone.

Keep your $6k until you find a watch that you cannot take your eyes off.

They are not rare anymore, every Ad I have been in the past year has one. Don't waste your money on hype, if you don't love the watch, why would you buy one.

You should love it, not just like it. Thats about the best advice, otherwise buyers remorse will eat your brain!

First the GV is not rare at all. There are plenty around. When they first came out 2 years ago the price went up to $20K. People who purchased at that time thought the watch was rare.

No production watch is rare while in production. The rare factor comes into play after production stops.

The GV was a slow starter as Rolex had problems with cracking green crystals and halted production. Now the problem has been solve and full production is on.

In Japan, the GV is sold slightly below MSRP.

Agree with other posts. If you're buying it only because it is less common and not because you enjoy the watch then there will be many more better ones out there for the money.

Thanks for the thoughtful remarks. I actually love the green one but felt pushed to get it now due to it's so called rarity.
That makes me think, does anyone how long the Milgauss will be around until ? Anyone have a clue when they could end this limited production model ?
It actually took me a year to see a green one in the store where I bought my Air-King !
Cheers, Swisslivingame

First and most importantly, the Milgauss GV is not a limited production model, and neither are the ordinary black or white dial versions. The GV is an anniversary edition, nothing more, and should be in production for the forseeable future.

Second, the rarity factor that contributed to a high premium when the watch was first issued has now gone, and ADs in Singapore (and I believe elsewhere) are now selling the watch at the list price, or perhaps even at a discount. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the initial rarity factor was artificially created by dealers hoping to con the public into believing the watch was rare, thereby making everyone pay more.

Third, good luck! Since you say you love the watch, then go for it and if you do, keep us informed! It's a buyer's market at the moment, so you might be able to negotiate a decent discount off the list price

I think this is a great watch. I bought one in HK at MSRP (no discount). Among the ones that I have SS Daytona, GMT Master IIc, Explorer II, the GV is currently rank one in terms of my favorite.
But it doesn't seem like it is rare anymore. My colleague also just got one from the same AD in hk (again, no discount). ADs in HK dont put the GVs on display. But if you know the AD well enough (and have bought other watches from the AD before), they will probably try to look for one for you.

But you should get it, it looks NICE...

Herzlich Willkommen!

Eine frage. Wo haben Sie das gehoert wegen den Umsatz von Rolex? Gibt es was zu lesen oder? Ich bedanke mich!

And the Milgauss GV, not so uncommon. Find the watch that you like the best!

I week later: Nice to still see it in the window actually, screaming for me to get it ! It's nice to know though there's no more stress factor over a perceived rarity.

I just love Rolex without the cyclops date (though as I become more and more a Rolex guy, I'm liking it more and more!). The green, the black and the orange, rocks !
My only Rolex now is the Air-King (no date) but now I can wait a little longet for the GV.
Looking at Rolex pricing the GV price is pretty good.

how about a SD4000 without the cyclops and still has the date? I love it.

Hi Diablojota,
Heard about the 40% out here, from a friends with contacts in the industry. All the brands are lower though..
In fact, no 5-7 % price hike this year (like they often do).
BTW: I am told that Rolex is building a new site in Biel (making it the 3rd one).

40% seems to be the magic number for a lot of industries in this downturn. For a mass manufacturer of expensive luxuries like Rolex, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I, literally, just received my Milguass GV from my AD (he's in NJ)...the geen crystal is what sold me on it (the contrast with the orange bolt is really fantastic)....the only problem I have with it is I have to go get it sized so I am forced to stare at it until then...the horror. Seriously, I love unique looking watches (especially from a color and size (and shape) perspective...think green sub, pepsi gmt, panerai's, old school chronos) and the GV delivers...that's just my opinion.

Hello,

My first post! I purchased my first Rolex (SS Sub) in 1987 with my first bonus check. I bought my wife steel GMT Master II a few years ago along with a ladies watch a number of years earlier. I was in las vegas this week and went to the AD and looked at the watches they had, have always wanted a black face steel daytona, they did not have one. But he pulled out of the back the GV. I fell in love with it, old school look with the green did it for me. Paid the sticker with no discount. So far I am very happy.

I like them but dont buy it as an investment.
They were impossible to get in the UK but now they are reasonably easy...and i have been offered new in box at under list [£600 under].

Also even ebay in the UK has Black and white dial going £1000 below list.

If you like it buy it...but i think they might well loose more value before they pick up.

Best,
James.
