Think I am done collecting

I have purchased some cool pieces over the last several years. At this point I have several pieces I have liked from a distance and some that I never thought I would own like a white DJ 41mm non fluted and a recent 2021 Bluesy.

Truth is, I am finding it difficult to wear all of the watches I own. Serious considering taking a hiatus from purchasing any more watches and possibly even getting rid of some pieces. For example, I own a 2020 Speedmaster hesalite that I thought I would like more than a really do. Looks great, but I find myself reaching for something else to wear most of the time.

I have a GMT Master II, which I love, but really try not to wear it because I find the bracelet sucks and I reach for a glidelock sub most of the time. Anyone else been through this? What did you do, start selling your watches?

Consolidate. Sell 2-3 pieces and buy 1 nicer piece. Easier to rotate between that way.

This is normal.

But you wouldn't have known all this until you tried them for yourself.

Time to sell some off and get some other ones to try.

I could be a one watch guy. I keep telling myself that. But it is nice to have a few that excite. Sometimes it takes owning to know if you really dig a piece. I prefer to add before deciding.

I have a Submariner and a Speedmaster. I wear the Submariner about 5 days a week and the Speedmaster about 2 days per week.

I think I want 1 or 2 more watches. A DJ41, blue dial, fluted bezel on a jubilee is probably going to be my 3rd watch. It’s quite possible I’d never get another watch after that. I could be very happy with those 3 watches.

If I get a 4th watch, a Breitling Navitimer B01 43mm could be my choice. It’s sort of redundant since I already have a Speedmaster, but I always loved that watch.

After that, I just don’t see a need for any more watches.

It sounds to me that your collection is quite narrow and Rolex heavy. Given that many Rolex (and other generally popular) watches share similar features, maybe that is the reason you are lacking excitement. Perhaps consolidate most, but buy one or two other pieces that branch further out.

You are not alone. I sold my 40MM Sub and swapped it for the 41 Sub. I find the 40 I much more comfortable. The crown digs into my wrist on the 41. I wouldn’t know this without actually wearing it for a while. Trying it on is not enough.

Same thing with watches that you love the idea of having. But not love wearing them.

If you don’t wear it, move it. No sense in keeping them.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have 5 Rolexes and an Omega SMPc. The only things getting wrist time are my 116655, 126610LV, and 126711 CHNR. The Omega was worn like 3 times and is as good as gone. I just been lazy when it comes to listing it. I always debate selling the 114060 and 116400 GV and replacing those with a TT Sub and calling it a day with a 4 watch collection. I think the only reason I'm hanging on to the Milgauss is because of its uniqueness. There's just nothing I really want out there anymore so I have no desire to purchase anything just to build a collection.

It’s a great time to off the watches you don’t love.

I also prefer to daily a glide lock Sub or a leather strap Patek out of comfort.

I’d sell the others and park the cash for something later. Zero sense holding them in such an inflated market.

So yes, slowly I started paring down my collection from 7 or 8 really good watches down to one, my sub. What I realized for me, is that I’m not curating a gallery of watches, I actually wear them and found each watch was getting worn maybe like 6 weeks out of the entire year. I had a couple that needed service after a few years (non Rolex models) and were barely worn. So the question is are we simply accumulating stuff because we can and chasing the dopamine high, or are we into wearing watches. For me, it was the latter. I sold off my most recent watch and put it into a new dual suspension mountain bike which allows me to have better experiences and not just accumulate more stuff. Now days, I’m more likely to spend on experience than simple accumulation. Not saying I’m done, but for me it’s one watch goes if a new one comes in. There needs to be a space. I have a seiko arnie for sports in many cases, sub for anything, and a field watch my wife gave me. They all get action and all serve a role. If the only role a watch is serving is filling a spot in the safe, maybe you don’t need it.

Try putting the glidelock on the GMT and see what you think about it.

Consider putting each watch away in a drawer or safe out of sight for a month. If you don't miss it during that time, then it is a strong sign it is time to sell that watch.

Good luck.

Everyone goes through these phases. But other times will come too. You are happy when you have a little choice. The taste also changes over the years. Keep all of your watches and be happy with each one!

The reality is that we only ever need 2/3 watches but the whole “high” of coming onto a forum snd seeing others people’s collections and wanting more watches keeps people buying more and more.

It makes me confused when I see people with very similar watches in different colours, because I’m damn near sure they don’t wear them on the regular and they’re just show pieces for people online.

I have my DJ41 (J/F), OP41 and waiting for my Submariner. I also have an Baby Snowflake, a Casio GOS/Atomic Radio/Solar and G-Shock. But none of the others cost more than £1400 and I can’t really shift them so I almost have to kept them.

But if I had the chance to buy everything at the same time, I’d just stick with the DJ, Sub, Baby Snowflake and G Shock

Yes, sometimes less is more.

I always give a watch a year or two (even longer) and a decent amount of wrist time before deciding whether it’s for me.

Like you, I can’t get my head around owning 3 or 4 at any given time. To each their own

Going through the same thing. Younger...working....I would wear them all. Now older and recently retired, I have a core group of 3-5 that I wear. I’ve been considering my options: selling them or donating them to goodwill or something.

I set aside a couple special or limited pieces aside, then put everything else in a large display case. I’ve only taken out the stuff I wear. The stuff still inside the case are the one I should part with. Funny though, I can remember where and why I bought all of them.

It’s a little “hard” to let go though. None of them were an investment, and it doesn’t hurt anything to keep them. Thought about selling some for a low price just to pass on, but many people out there don’t know what “as is” means, even when you disclose any scratches and adjust the price accordingly. I got time to decide....

Editing to add:
PS- my clan of watches is dominated by Gshocks, Seiko divers, and Hamilton.

Reaching for something else...bracelet sucks...these might be signs those watches aren't for you.

Do some reflection on what you do want to wear...and why. Good luck,

Consolidate down to 2/3/4 (whatever feels right to you). Buy 1 PM Rolex

Think I am done collecting

Great insights. I really do like every watch I own, and think under the right circumstances, I would wear them more often, but with work, I typically don’t like wearing some of my pieces. Don’t really want to part with any but would not be sad if that happened either..truly just pieces of jewelry to me. At any rate, I appreciate the responses. Will try the glidelock on the GMT, been meaning to do this. I remember the day when an SKX 009 was my only watch (I still own one). That was great.

Once I got the Omega 300m, the Rolex sits more than it should. Still love it, but I may be in the same boat.

Just make sure you only sell what you haven't worn for a while and don't feel like wearing and/or keeping. Also, something you don't see yourself wearing in the future. Seller's remorse is a terrible thing. Buying back will cost you.

The more pieces you get, the less you wear them; naturally. The definition of "collection" is different for everyone. If you feel as though pieces are becoming superfluous, it is best to consolidate or have a "one in, one out" policy when it comes to new watches. I think everyone goes through a period where they fall in love with watches in general, or a particular brand, and they just collect as much as they can afford/want. Then once the watchbox fills up, you start to prioritize particular pieces. I definitely have watches that I wear 2-3 times more than other pieces. I do not yet have any pieces that get zero wrist time, but there are watches in my collection that would get replaced with a nicer alternative if I have the opportunity to buy one.

My GMT-Master II and my Speedmaster are pieces in my collection that probably get the most wrist time. If they don't in yours, consider getting something else you would wear in their place.

The horological world reaches far beyond modern Rolex's. Ask yourself if your truly interested in watches? I love watches more then I should LOL. But I always have. It's a passion and I enjoy collecting. Maybe this hobby came and went faster then you expected?

I’m shocked you called the gmt bracelet poor. I’ve literally never heard that (ignoring what people think of PCLs)

Two many in rotation is a problem; easier with just a few.

Give it a rest for a decade for major updates and design changes. Then like Rip Van Winkle, it'll all be new and fun again at least models to choose from.

It's just a continuous process for watch enthusiasts and you're one too...
You just sell off the not too favourites and get another set...
