New incoming during Sydney lockdown with no purchase history
I can't believe I have the chance to post this but I got the call today!
It's the new 2021 Explorer 124270 and I'll be sure to post pics once I receive it. We're still in lockdown here in Sydney, Australia, so the watch will be delivered to me via armoured courier (according to the AD) next week. I have no purchase history with the Rolex AD. I first approached them in Oct 2019 for the 39mm Explorer and popped in every couple of months to build rapport and reaffirm my interest. In late 2020, I went in and told them how worried I was that the 39mm might be increased to 41mm in line with their OP range because 36-39mm is my preferred size. Still had no luck with acquiring one and I suspect production had slowed dramatically in view of the new models in 2021. When the new 36mm was announced earlier this year, I went straight down to the AD to confirm my interest. I got a call 2 weeks later but much to my dismay it was just to try on a display piece that they had in store. Needless to say, I went in and fell head over heels for the 36mm. My wrists are a touch over 7 inches and it's such a sweet size for it. I've seen lots of naysayers condescendingly say it's for women but it just seems like insecurity to me. Anyway, to everyone who's waiting for the call, there is hope so hang in there! |

Congratulations, same thing happened to me here in the UK when we were in lockdown in January.
Some light at the end of a pretty dim tunnel, shows there is hope for anyone who persists and keeps in touch with their AD. |

Congrats - I've seen on the main Explorer thread that the 124270 is seen by ADs as an enthusiast's watch rather than a flipper's watch, so that may explain the relative ease compared to other stainless steel professional watches.

Big congrats on your new gorgeous 36 explorer!
I think you got lucky. Always nice to hear a good news like this. Actually with your wrist size (over 7"), you should be able to wear all of Rolex models. Take a wrist shots and shows it to us.

Congrats Ben,,
Wear in good health,,, I have never bought into the “36mm is too small”” nonsense,,, My flat 7in wrist is good for a max of 41mm with 36-40mm being the sweet spot but that’s for me,, plenty with 7in wrists that wear much larger watches and they look very good,, |

They also look at the 124060 in a similar light depending on the "discussion" with the prospective buyer. (enthusiast or not). Some AD's realize the enthusiast is who will keep coming back to their business. A large AD in our state lost their status due to supplying a grey consistently, or so I was told by my AD and a former rep at the previous AD. So here they are terrified of flippers. |

For many years 36mm was considered to be a terrific unisex size.
As far as I know it still is. My first <still have> is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Rolesor from 1987. Since then I have gone to larger watches, about 39-42mm on average, but the OPD still looks good on me and I still wear it in rotation. "First and favorite" so to say. I saw somewhere, years ago, some huge famous athlete who wore a 34mm Rolex or such and he was apparently good with it. It is a matter of a person's own choice and likes.

Thanks everyone! Can't wait to post some pics.
I know the Explorer isn't a hot model and it's probably easier to get but they sure kept me waiting! |

Hi Ben, very nice watch, congratulations! I'm also in Sydney and have put down a deposit for a 124270.
I only registered my interest with the AD at the beginning of August and they said that they would be able to get me the watch within 2 months, but they wanted a (refundable) deposit to ensure that I was serious about it. Would love to see your pics when you have them! I've wanted a 36mm Explorer for a long time so was happy to see that it returned to the original size earlier this year. |

Congratulation OP. Is that Rolex boutique or AD? Patience is a virtue for sure!

Congratulations on your new Explorer! A 36mm Oyster case is good for most wrists. I feel the naysayers are just into large looking watches or it's insecurity, as you mentioned.

My experience is similar to yours. I had my name down for the 39mm, worried that Rolex would pump it up to 41mm, but was overjoyed to hear that it was going to 36mm.
I'm now glad that I didn't get the 39mm in time. I have the 39mm black OP and the Explorer is different enough to make them not too similar. The anti-reflective coating on the Exp makes a big difference.

Excellent, congrats! I saw in this thread that the Explorer isn't a "hot" watch, but my AD says that's not so. I expressed interest in the Explorer and a Sub 124060 back in April. I already got the Sub, but am still waiting on the Explorer, and was told it could still be a while. I was told it's actually more sought after than the Sub right now since it's a new model. Maybe that's a regional thing.

Also managed to snag a 124270 during the Sydney lockdown at MSRP from an AD with no purchase history by asking politely and respectfully. Put in the request on 2nd August, paid for it on the 24th and picked it up the next day. I think that it helped that when I spoke to the AD it was clear that I wasn't a flipper.
I live within 5km of the AD so could just walk in and collect the watch. Have had my eye on one of these since the 114270 came out in 2001 but because I have small wrists (6.5 inch), the 39mm version was a fraction too big for me. Very happy when I found out that Rolex had reintroduced the 36mm version, and the new bracelet is so much better than the vintage one. This is actually my first 6 digit Rolex (have two others, a 4 digit Air-King and a 5 digit GMT) so it'll be interesting to see how this one goes but the size is feeling pretty good right now! |
